Dominican Republic boys’ team and Guatemala girls’ team won the North/Central America & Caribbean pre-qualifying event for the 14 & under World Junior Tennis competition in El Salvador.
The two teams advance to the North/Central America & Caribbean final qualifying event, which will be held in Boca Raton, Florida, USA on 1-3 May. There they will compete against teams from Canada, Mexico and USA for the region’s two available places in the World Junior Tennis Finals to be held on 3-8 August in Prostejov, Czech Republic.
Thirteen boys’ teams and 12 girls’ teams represented the 13 participating nations in El Salvador. In the boys’ event, fifth seed Dominican Republic dominated its round-robin group, going on to defeat Nicaragua 2-1 in the semifinals and sixth seed Bahamas 2-1 in the final. In the girls’ competition, third seed Guatemala won its round-robin group in similarly convincing fashion, before overcoming top seed El Salvador 2-1 in the semifinals and second seed Honduras 2-1 in the final.
