| Wild Cards Dominate at Orange Bowl |
Day 3 saw the host nation dominate in the girls draw. Of the sixteen available spots in the third round, USA girls claimed eleven of them. Whilst the top two seeds progressed against American opponents, their fellow seeds were not able to follow suit as the American Wild Cards wreaked havoc. Twelve seeds went into the second round, only six have progressed to the third.
The most unlikely victory came from sixteen year old ChiChi Scholl (USA). Ranked 956, Scholl entered the main draw via qualifying. In the second round she produced the match of her junior career, defeating sixth seed Beatrice Gumulya (INA) 76(1) 60. Fellow Qualifier and compatriot Allie Will comfortably defeated thirteenth seed Zsofia Susanyi (HUN), 62 61.
Incredibly, six American Wild Cards remain in the draw. Pick of the results for the Wild Cards was Nicole Gibbs’ defeat of third seed Kristina Mladenovic (FRA) 63 62. Sloane Stephens (USA) followed suit by defeating fifth seed Mallory Burdette (USA) whilst Christina McHale claimed the scalp of twelfth seed Anna Orlik.
Meanwhile top seed Ana Bodgan (ROU) maintained her steady progress with a 75 61 victory over the youngest player in the draw, Sachia Vickery (USA). Second seed Laura Robson (GBR) completed a routine victory 62 61 over Qualifier Courteney Dolehide (USA).
The top two boys seeds also continued their winning ways in the second round. Tsung Hua Yang, newly named Junior No.1, completed a routine straight sets victory over Richard hampel (CZE) 75 63.
Yang will now face Alex Domijan in what is easily the tie of the third round. Domijan’s victory in the second round over compatriot Jordan Cox, 63 60, extended his winning streak to an incredible thirteen matches on the ITF Juniors Circuit, a run that takes in the GB1 Pan American ITF and the G1 Eddie Herr ITF and has seen his ranking jump by over one hundred places to break into the top 50. Victory at the Orange Bowl – a distinct possibility if he can overcome Yang - would see Domijan close to a top ten breakthrough.
Domijan was joined by five other Americans in a successful day for the host nation. Devin Britton and Evan King both eliminated seeded players in their second round matches, fifteenth seed Tennys Sandgren (USA) and twelfth seed Blaz Rola (SLO) respectively. Sixth seed Chase Buchanan (USA) is also safely through to the third round, whilst Brian Noble (USA) continues to justify his Wild Card with another victory in the second round over Vladzimir Kruk (BLR), ranked over 200 places above him. Noble’s reward for the victory is a third round match with the number two seed Yuki Bhambri.
A further three seeds lost, most notably fifth seed Jose Pereira (BRA), who was defeated 75 61 by Qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO). Eighth seed Borut Puc (SLO) lost a three set battle to Julien Obry (FRA) 75 46 63, whilst ninth seed Ryan Lipman was eliminated by Emilio Gomez (ECU) in a third set tie-break.
