USA bids for historic double
The USA is on course for an historic double at the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas finals after both teams earned final spots at the 16-and under team competition.

The USA Junior Fed Cup team of Christina McHale, Kristie Ahn and Sloane Stephens beat Hungary 3-0 to earn themselves a shot at the title. The USA boys beat India when Evan King and Denis Kudla beat Saurabh Singh and Yuki Bhambri respectively and will now take on Argentina, who downed the much-fancied Russian boys’ team with wins for Andrea Collarini and Agustin Velotti over Richard Muzaev and Mikhail Biryukov.

The USA won both titles at the 14-and under World Junior Tennis finals in Prostejov last month and would be the first nation ever to win all four titles in a year if both its teams are victorious on Sunday.

Great Britain overcame Belarus 2-1 in their Junior Fed Cup semi-final. Heather Watson set the tone with a thumping 6-1, 6-2 win over Svetlana Pirazhenka 6-1, 6-3 to put her team in the lead before Tara Moore took Great Britain into the final with an emphatic 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Anna Orlik.

“It feels unbelievable. Qualifying feels like such a long time ago so to come here and to be here and in the final is such a good final,” said Watson. “I think you get more nervous watching than playing the matches but you have to support your team-mate.”

Moore and Watson are unbeaten in singles this week. After another confident, poised performance on Saturday, Moore admitted that her team-mate had taken some of the pressure off her as the team’s designated No.1 player. “Heather played so well and that made me feel a lot better because you can go out there knowing that even if you do lose your match you can still win it in the doubles,” said Moore. “That’s a really good feeling to go out there with confidence and be able to bring it home.”

Team Captain Iain Bates was delighted with the composure his team showed on such a big occasion. “Today mine was a very easy job because both girls played terrific matches, said Bates. “Heather was very mentally strong and played a very good match to go through a decent opponent. She was chuffed to bits with her performance, as I was, and it was really just a question of keeping it going and keeping her mentally focused. Tara just played another fantastic match where she was in control of everything that she was doing. It was so nice for me to be on the court today with two such fantastic players giving such good performances in what were really big matches.”

Sunday will mark the second time this year that British girls have been involved in a prestigious junior team final. Great Britain’s 14-and-under girls’ team was runner-up to the USA in Prostejov. “It’s nice that we have been able to match that,” said Bates. “Maybe we can go one better than them and come home with the title.”
