BOYS
Group A: USA-RSA: 2-1 CRO-AUS: 0-3
Top seeds USA were victorious again today. Tyler Gardiner (USA) gave them a perfect start with a 61 60 victory over Brandon Ebersey (RSA) in the first singles match. South African team’s number one player Wayne Montgomery (RSA) then turned the momentum back to South Africa by taking the second singles rubber in straight set 75 76(2), overcoming the huge height advantage he was giving away to Alexios Halebian (USA). Montgomery and partner Marc Van Der Merwe (RSA) could not match their American counterparts Tyler Gardiner and Christian Harrison, and the Americans won the deciding doubles rubber 62 63. USA will play eighth seeds Croatia tomorrow.
Australia, last years winners but unseeded this year, defeated eighth seeds Croatia today. Jack Schipanski (AUS) beat Filip Veger (CRO) 62 06 75 in the first singles match. Luke Saville (AUS) was also pushed to three sets by Ivan Levar (CRO), before he prevailed 57 75 63, with Australia wrapping up the tie with a victory in the doubles.
Group B: GBR-BRA: 2-1 IND-EGY: 3-0
India maintained their 100% record at the tournament with a second victory today. Their opponents today, Egypt, could not contain the Indians in any of the three ties. Diavijay Singh put his team on track with a 62 63 win over Ahmed Abdel latif. India's number one, Rohit Bisht then defeated Egypt's in form number one Karim Hossam, 63 61. Bisht then combined with India's Diavijay Singh to defeat the Egyptian pair of Hossam and Sherif Abo Habaja 62 63 in the dead rubber doubles match.
Sixth seeds Great Britain played fourth seeds Brazil on TK Prostejovs Court No.1 today. Vitor Pinheiro (BRA) drew first blood for Brazil with a 63 76(6) victory against the British team's number two Conor Bunting. Pedro Dumont, Brazil's number one faced Liam Broady in the second singles tie. A 64 26 64 victory for Broady was the result of a passionate, drawn out battle between the two players. With the tie at a stalemate, Dumont and Pinheiro combined to face Broady and Bunting in the deciding doubles match. Broady and Bunting have formed a strong partnership in doubles and their commitment was plain to see to the spectators that had gathered to watch the end of a compelling tie. The British pair claimed the first set 62 and broke in the second force match point on Dumonts serve. The Brazilian held out and forced the set to a tie-break which the British pair won 76(5). The two undefeated teams in Group B, India and Great Britain will meet each other tomorrow in a winner takes all match, whilst Brazil will face Egypt.
Group C: RUS-CHN: 2-1 VEN-CAN: 0-3
Canada continued their good form so far in the tournament by winning both singles ties against Venezuela. Filip Peliwo (CAN) was forced to three sets by Efrain Noguera (VEN), however the Canadian held off the challenge from Venezuelan to win 16 76(4) 46. Canadian number one Edward Nguyen wrapped up a victory for his country with a 60 64 win over Kennedy Cancelado. Canada will face third seeds Russia tomorrow.
Russia met fifth seeds China today in a thrilling contest. Konstantin Gerlakh (RUS) faced Zhao Cai (CHN) in the day's first tie, which went the way of the Chinese player over three long and sometimes controversial sets, 64 67(4) 46. Evgeny Karlovski then thrilled the Russian support on Centre Court with a 63 63 victory over Chinese number two Junnan Tao to draw level. Russian numbers two and three, Konstantin Gerlakh and Vitaly Kozyukov respectively, then faced the Chinese numbers one and two, Xin Gao and Junnan Tao in the deciding douubles match. The Russians claimed the match in a closely fought straight sets victory 64 75. Undefeated third seeds Russia will now provide a very stern test for the undefeated and unseeded Canadian team.
Group D: FRA-CZE: 2-1 KOR-PER: 3-0
Second seeds France defeated host nation Czech Republic in both singles rubbers, making the doubles a dead rubber. Mathias Bourgue (FRA) made a commeback to defeat Marek Jaloviec (CZE) 46 61 61, before Lucas Pouille sealed victory for France with a 75 64 win over Adam Pavlasek (CZE). Korea, seeded seventh, beat Peru in straight sets in both singles rubbers today. Yong-Joo Jeong (KOR) eased to victory against Fernando Cornejo (PER), 61 63, whilst Jae-Hwan Kim (KOR) gave Korea an unassailable lead in the tie by defeating the Peru teams number one, Daniel Santos 76(4) 64. Korea will now face second seeds France tomorrow to decide who progresses to the semifinal.
GIRLS
Group A: BEL-JPN: 3-0 UKR-BRA: 3-0
After yesterday’s scare against Japan, top seeds Ukraine scored a comfortable 3-0 win over Brazil on the courts of the old areal in Prostejov. Kateryna Kozlova and Elina Svitolina did not drop a set in both their singles and doubles matches. The other seeded team of the group, Belgium, also kept a clean record by securing their second victory, which was also decided in the singles already. Elke Lemmens defeated Kaede Koyama in two sets, while Ann-Sophie Mestach had to work a lot harder to overcome Risa Ozaki. This sets up a group final between Ukraine and Belgium tomorrow that promises some exciting tennis. Group B: USA-CZE: 3-0 CHN-SRB: 1-2
The Serbian girls created the upset of the day by defeating third seed China in a tie that was already decided after the singles matches. In an epic three hour encounter, Ntalija Kostic battled to victory over Ha-Fan Wang before Tamara Curovic sealed the second point against Hao-Chen Tang. Fifth seed USA were facing host nation Czech Republic today. To the disappointment of the home spectators, the USA were too strong for the Czech girls. Grace Min and Sachia Vickery overcame their opponents Pernilla Mendesova and Kamila Pavelkova in straight sets. This leaves USA as clear favourites to reach the semifinals before tomorrow’s last group matches.
Group C: GBR-TUN: 3-0 BOL-AUS: 1-2
Fourth seed Great Britain continue their domination of the group by defeating Tunisia. Anais Deville put up a great fight against Jessica Ren who played her second three set match of the tournament, but also prevailed today. Laura Robson then convincingly beat Ons Jabour to make the doubles a dead rubber. Sixth seed Bolivia, winner of the South America qualifying event, were facing Australia today in their quest to remain unbeaten. Maria Ines Deheza however lost the opening singles to Molly Polak. Her sister Maira Paula levelled the match with a win over Australia’s number one Viktorija Rajicic. Rajicic and Polak had the stronger nerves in the third set of the decisive doubles rubber, which the Australian girls won 64. With a similar situation as in group B, the British team are favourites to reach the semifinal with a victory over Bolivia tomorrow.
Group D: RUS-RSA: 3-0 UZB-CAN: 1-2
Second seed Russia made short work of South Africa. Yulia Putinseva and Polina Leykina (both RUS) both did not drop a single game in their respective singles matches against Kay-Leigh Nicholas and Lenice Van Eyk (both RSA). They will now play their last group tie tomorrow against Uzbekistan that could not confirm their seeding position of 7th seed against Canada. While Sabina Sharipova defeated Canada’s no.2, Emma Onila in straight sets, Nigina Abduraimova lost to Eugenie Bouchard who left another very good impression after her defeat of Daria Gavrilova from Russia yesterday. Bouchard and Onila then teamed up to beat the Uzbek pair of Abduraimova and Diyora Saidmuhkamedova.
