World Junior Tennis Finals 2008 Preview
The 18th World Junior Tennis Finals will begin on the clay courts of TK Prostejov in the Czech Republic, on Monday.

For the 10th consecutive year, the club is hosting the official ITF team competition finals for boys and girls aged 14 & under.

From a total of 83 countries and a record 169 teams, 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams representing 23 nations have fought their way through regional qualifying competitions to take their place in this year’s Finals.

The 16 teams in each event will now be divided into 4 round robin groups, with the group winners progressing to the knockout stages, before the finals are played on Saturday.

USA are top seeds in the boys’ event. They are joined by France, winners of this year’s European Summer Cup, which acted as the final stage of qualifying in Europe. Russia are third seeds and the current South American champions, Brazil, are seeded fourth and will also challenge for honours.

The Ukraine, current European champions following their Europa Cup victory this summer are top seeds in the girls’ event. The beaten finalists that day were Russia, who are the second seeds. The Russian team will be lead by European U14 Number one Daria Gavrilova. Asian champions, China, are seeded third and will look to capture their first World Junior Tennis title. Seeded fourth, Great Britain will also look towards the latter stages of the competition, as Laura Robson, current Junior Wimbledon champion, leads a strong team.

Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Nicole Vaidisova and Amelie Mauresmo are among the current stars who once played World Junior Tennis. This week’s competitors will be looking to take their own first steps along the road to becoming champions.

The Draw Ceremony will take place on Sunday evening at 8pm and play will begin on Monday morning after the Opening Ceremony.
