| Rus makes early exit in Milan |
With persistent rain falling throughout the morning and returning again in the early evening, opportunities to complete matches came frustratingly infrequently on day two of the Trofeo Bonfiglio. However, the weather did allow all first round matches to be completed and six players even made it through to the last 16.
With an unprecedented number of seeded players losing on day one, those who remained in the draw would have been acutely aware that their chances of lifting a Grade A trophy had been significantly increased. Those chances became even greater when Australian Open champion Rus was outplayed by Russian qualifier Anastasiya Mukhametova in her opening match, losing 62 64. Seventh seed Elena Chernyakova (RUS) also lost in straight sets to Britain’s Laura Robson, finalist last week at the Grade 1 in Santa Croce.
On the whole, however, day two saw more success for seeds in the girls’ event. Japanese fourth seed Kurumi Nara defeated Italian wildcard Martina Caregaro 62 61, eighth seed Jessy Rompies (INA) beat Zsofia Susanyi (HUN) 60 63, tenth seed Aki Yamasoto (JPN) overcame Kirstina Huba (SUI) 62 62 and fourteenth seed Cindy Chala (FRA) struggled past qualifier Santa Shulmina (RUS) 61 57 63.
Meanwhile, Gerdau Cup champion Elena Bogdan (ROU), seeded fifth, made it through to the last 16 with a 76(3) 63 win over Nadia Lalami (MAR). She is joined by Valeriya Solovieva (RUS), who beat Diana Marcu (ROU) 63 61.
In the boys’ event the top two seeds, Bernard Tomic (AUS) and Cesar Ramirez (MEX), were both forced to fight back from a set down to make it through to round two. Australian Open champion Tomic lost a tight opening set against Italian qualifier Matthieu Vierin before showing great determination to pull off a 57 64 61 win. Ramirez had an almost identical story against Erik Crepaldi, also and Italian qualifier, eventually winning 36 64 62.
All remaining seeds made it through to the second round, although Gerdau Cup winner Jose Pereira (BRA), seeded three, and sixteenth seed Di Wu (CHN), both having come through an epic three setters in round one, were subsequently overcome in round two. Pereira lost 64 61 to Jared Easton (AUS) and Wu went out 64 63 to Vasek Pospisil (CAN).
