Brazilians Battle Through whilst Brits Tumble
The Brazilian home crowd were delighted to be able to hail their own at the Grade A Gerdau Cup as three Brazilian boys battled their way into the third round. Wild Card Rafael Camilo, appearing in his first ITF event in over a year, defeated Briton Neil Pauffley. Further home success came from Qualifier Andre Vidaller who defeated fourteenth seed Briton Michael Thompson 64 61. The trio of Brazilian successes was completed by tenth seed Jose Pereira, who defeated Juan Sebastian Vivanco (ECU) 64 75.

Vidaller will now play a highly anticipated match against third seed Juan Vazquez-Valenzuela (ARG), whilst Camilo faces fifth seed Guillaume Rufin (FRA). Pereira faces the only Briton left in the draw, Niall Angus.

The top three seeds in the boys’ singles, Marcelo Arevalo (ESA), Alexandre Folie (BEL) and Juan Vazquez-Valenzuela (ARG), all made it safely into the third round with the loss of just seven games between them.

The highest seed in the boys singles to lose was sixth seed Jose Hernandez (DOM) who went down 46 64 64 to Andrea Colarini (ARG). The other seeded casualties were seventh seed Saavedra-Corvalan (CHI) who lost to Sam Garforth-Bles (CAN) 76(3) 62 and eleventh seed Axel Michon (FRA) who lost to Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (GER) 64 64.

In the girls’ event twelve of the sixteen seeds made it safely through to the third round, with the top six seeds all recording straight sets victories. Top seed Bojana Jovanovski (SRB) defeated Ulrikke Eikeri (NOR) for the loss of just two games, whilst defending champion and second seed Cindy Chala (FRA) beat Nicole Smith (CAN) 62 63. With a total of twelve seeds making it through to the third round, there are five all seeded third round ties.

In the only surprise result of the girls’ second round, Russian Valeria Savinykh defeated ninth seed Veronica Cepede Royg (PAR). In a reversal of their only previous meeting, Savinykh won through to the third round with a 63 63 victory. She will meet fellow unseeded player Natassya Burnett (ITA) in the third round.

In the first round of the doubles events, top seeds in the boys’ event Belgian pair Folie & Reuter were defeated by Alexander Rumyantsev (RUS) and David Souto (VEN) 76(2) 62, with Souto gaining revenge for his earlier loss to Folie in the singles event. Third seeds Arelvalo & Diaz tumbled out with a loss at the hands of Llompart & Vazquez-Valenzuela whilst fifth seeds Knights (GBR) & Longhi (JPN) lost to British pair Thompson & Watling 63 62. The eighth seeds Hernandez & Uriguen also lost, completing a poor day for Hernandez, as Zanotelli & Stabile beat them 62 46 10-8. On the girls’ event, the only seeded pair not to reach the second round were fourth seeds Ana Bogdan & Diana Marcu, who lost to Nicole Smith & Alja Tomlanovic 57 63 10-4.
