The boys’ and the girls’ teams from Guatemala repeated last year’s feat and won the North/Central America & Caribbean pre-qualifying event for the 14 & under World Junior Tennis Competition in El Salvador from 15-20 February 2008.
The two teams advance to the North/Central America & Caribbean final qualifying event, which will be held in Montreal, Canada on 2-4 May.
Eleven boys’ teams and 10 girls’ teams represented the 12 participating nations. In the boys’ event, second seed Guatemala dominated their round robin group, before going on to defeat Aruba in the semifinals and third seed Panama 2-1 in the final. In the girls’ competition top seed Guatemala dominated their round robin group in similar fashion, before overcoming Honduras 2-1 in the semifinal and then 3rd seed Costa Rica 2-1 in the final.
ITF Representative Anthony Jeremiah reports: “There was great enthusiasm and passion by the players’, coaches and supporters which produced an energy that motivated the players to play better. It was great to see these young players hit the ball with intensity and displayed the true spirit of team competitions.”
“This was the first time at an ITF Junior Team Competition event and I was impressed with the high standard of play and sportsmanship displayed by the players,” said Mickey Williams, the ITF Referee from Bahamas.
