| Luck helps Berankis to stay in the race for the year end No.1 spot |
Ricardas Berankis must be thanking his lucky stars after reaching the final of the Orange Bowl and keeping his challenge for the World Champion title alive. The Lithuanian looked down and out at 2-5 down in the third set to American Jarmere Jenkins but just at the vital moment the American began to cramp, throwing Berankis a life line.
Jenkins had taken the first set 64 and Berankis the second 75 and the American looked all set to cause an upset at 5-2 in the third. However, as Jenkins began to cramp, Berankis managed to hang on in to level the set at 5-5 in the third. It was at this point that Jenkins was forced to retire, handing the match to Berankis, and forcing Uladzimir Ignatik, who was watching from the stands, to endure another day of waiting to see if he could hang on to the No.1 spot in the ranking.
Berankis will now face Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria in the final after he defeated Poland's Jerzy Janowicz 62 36 63 in the other semifinal.
The girls final will be between in form American Melanie Oudin and Portuguese prodigy Michelle Larcher de Brito.
