Belarussian Uladzimir Ignatik now has the ITF Junior World Championships firmly in his sights, as he advances another round at the Orange Bowl.
The current World No.1 put in another strong performance as he overwhelmed Russian Vladimir Zinyakov 61 62 to advance to the third round at the final Grade A tournament of the year. His victory represents a further blow Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis, who is the only other player still in with a chance of being crowned Junior World Champion. Berankis also advanced with a 63 64 victory over Jose Hernandez (DOM), but sees his chances of ending the year as World No.1 rapidly diminishing with each Ignatik victory.
The boys’ draw has seen 13 seeded players make it through to the last sixteen, with Chilean Guillermo Rivera the only seed to be defeated on day three, losing 57 76(4) 62 to Canadian Milos Raonic. Next up for Raonic is home favourite Chase Buchanan (USA), who came from behind in a thrilling encounter with Mirza Basic (BIH) to win 57 60 76(10). Alexei Grigorov (RUS), who knocked out third seed Roman Jebavy (CZE) in the first round, is the only unseeded player in the last 16, having comprehensively beaten Tim van Terheijden (NED) 62 62.
In the girls’ draw Polish top seed Urszula Radwanska, who is already confirmed as Junior World Champion, cruised through to round three with an emphatic 62 60 victory against Romana Tabakova (SVK). Radwanska has now lost just four games in two matches but could see a tougher test in her next opponent, Coco Vandeweghe (USA), who advanced thanks to a 63 61 win against Johanna Konta (AUS).
Sixth seed Bojana Jovanovski (SRB) was eliminated in round two, going down 76(3) 63 to Kristy Frilling (USA), while Jade Curtis (GBR) caused the only other upset of the day, beating another American, fourteenth seed Gail Brodsky, 64 64. In her next match Curtis faces second seed and defending Orange Bowl champion Nikola Hofmanova (AUT), who made it through with a 61 75 win against Alison Will (USA).
