Wild Card Upsets Continue at Orange Bowl
The American wild cards continued their success from day one into day two at the Orange Bowl. Riske & Weinhold’s victories yesterday inspired four of the wild cards in the girls event to win their first round ties.

15-year-old wild card Coco Vandeweghe, in her first ITF event since September, overcame the odds as she knocked out thirteenth seed Tamaryn Hendler (BEL). Despite being ranked a full 245 places lower than her opponent, Vandeweghe won comfortably, recording a 63 64 victory.

Hendler was not the only seed to crash out in the first round as three other seeds suffered the same fate. Arantxa Rus (NED) caused the upset of the day as she defeated Julia Cohen (USA). Cohen, seeded fifth, is in her final year on the Juniors Circuit and at her hometown tournament she was expected to feature in the latter stages of the tournament. However it was Rus that prevailed, winning 64 62 and leaving Cohen to concentrate on the Yucatan Cup to mark the end of her Junior career.

Fellow seed Julia Glushko (ISR) suffered defeat against qualifier Santa Shumilina (RUS) despite winning the first set. Shumilina produced an excellent comeback to take the match to three sets and eventually prevailed 36 64 63. Elena Chernyakova (RUS), seeded tenth, suffered the same fate in her match against qualifier Keri Wong (USA) losing 46 63 61.

Last weeks victor at the Eddie Herr Tournament, Melanie Oudin (USA) continued her good form as she confidently swept past Alyona Sotnikova (UKR) 60 63. All ten other seeds recorded straight set victories to progress to the second round.

Fellow Eddie Herr champion, Gastao Elias (POR), was forced to work for his opening victory, as yet another American wild card performed excellently, taking Elias to three sets before the Eddie Herr champion prevailed 61 46 62.

Second seed Ricardas Berankis kept his hopes of beating Uladzimir Ignatik to the year end number one ranking alive with a straight sets victory over qualifier Dino Marcan (CRO), 63 62 on a day in which all featured seeds won their opening ties.

Day 2 also saw the first round of the doubles events played. Glushko’s (ISR) Orange Bowl was brought to an end completely as she and her partner Romana Tabakova (SVK) were defeated by Astrugo (ISR) & Spremo (SRB) 64 76(4). Simona Halep (ROM) and her compatriot Ioana Ivan, seeded eighth also lost to the Russian pair of Guskova & Savinykh 63 61. All other seeded pairs in both the boys and girls events went through to the second round.
