Urzua-Rivera Crashes out in Osaka
Top seed Ricardo Urzua-Rivera (CHI) tumbled out of the Osaka Mayors Cup today losing to Ryan Harrison (USA).

Both players carried similar recent form into the match. However, Harrison’s two titles this year have both been won on the surface, whilst his opponent has struggled on the surface. Harrison eased to victory against the top seed and clay court specialist in straight sets, 75 62. Urzua-Rivera was Harrison’s second seeded victim, and if the American wants a third title of the year he will have to win the hard way as he faces another seeded player in the quarterfinal, local favourite Tadayuki Longhi (JPN).

The second shock of the day was delivered by the boy’s event sensation, James Seal (USA). The Wild Card entry defeated eighth seed Luka Somen (CRO) 64 64 and will now face fourth seed Christopher Rungkat.

The Japanese players produced all the shocks yesterday and Longhi continued the crowd-pleasing trend today as he defeated fifth seed Lorenzo Papsidero 60 67(6) 64. Sho Katayama, yesterday’s local hero, also maintained his impressive run with a 64 67(6) 62 victory, at the expense of fellow Japanese Hiromasa Oku and he will now face Mark Verryth, a member of Australia’s victorious Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team.

Unfortunately for the crowd, Japanese success could not be replicated in the girl’s event, as three of the four Japanese players, Inoue, Takayama & Yamasoto all fell to defeat. Their hopes now rest on fourth seed Kuruki Nara, with a 61 63 victory over compatriot Chihiro Takayama. She will play Jessy Rompies (INA) for a place in the semifinal.

Quite unlike the boys draw, seven of the eight girls singles matches went to the highest seeded players, with only Ana Bogdan (ROU) overcoming opposition ranked above her, by comfortably defeating ninth seed Nadiya Kichenok (UKR) 62 61. Top seed Hofmanova went through 61 63 against Caroline Magnussen (SWE) and second seed Ksenia Lykina (RUS) also eased past her opponent, Miyabe Inoue (JPN) 63 60. Third seed Chernyakova (RUS), seventh seed Zaniewska (POL) and twelfth seed Swanepoel (RSA) make up the other three victors today.
