Belarussian Ksenia Milevskaya took time out from blogging for the ITF Junior website to demolish Tamaryn Hendler of Belgian 6-1, 6-1 in the first round of the US Open girls’ competition on Tuesday. Milevskaya, who will be sharing her experiences of playing the final junior grand slam of the season with users on the ITF Juniors website all this week, said her quickfire win was worth waiting for.

“The first couple days I didn’t play, which was a bit boring, but today it was amazing to finally step on the court,” said Milevskaya, seeded seventh for the tournament. “I played really good and I enjoyed being on the court. You know, a couple of years ago I would have said I hated hard-courts but every day I start to like it more and more and I’m getting better on it every day. I think from the time I was young, seven years old, I was playing only on clay in summer. I was used to that and I never played on hardcourts. Then two years ago I went to train at an academy in California and I really get used to playing on hardcourts. For sure they’re faster.”

Having the first two days of the tournament off might have helped Milevskaya, who has been battling a cold which is currently doing the rounds of this year’s US Open. “Right now I’m feeling okay. I was a little bit sick a couple of days ago but right now I’m getting better and drinking Aspirin every day,” she said. The cold certainly has not stopped her from keeping her blogs. “It’s really nice, I like it a lot,” said Milevskaya. “The fans have to know the players. When I play, especially if I play the finals then maybe more people are going to come and watch me and cheer for me.”

In the boys’ competition, Italy’s Matteo Trevisan won arguably the junior match of the day when he eased past American Austin Krajicek 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to move through to the third round. Trevisan and Florida-born Krajicek battled in front of a sizeable crowd on the prestigious Grandstand court, one of the main showcourts at Flushing Meadows. “It was a really tough match today because I was playing on a big court and it was all new for me, so it was pretty difficult,” said Trevisan. “I was playing an American guy and he was playing really, really well. It was a really good match and I’m happy that I won. For me it’s been a great opportunity to play on Grandstand and I really enjoyed my match. For me I always say that this is my best tournament because I like the people and the situation. I like also the noise here – it makes me happy.”

Trevisan, seeded third for the tournament, will now face unseeded Slovenian Aljaz Bedene, who beat another Floridian, Frank Carleton 7-5, 6-4. Bedene knocked out 14th seeded Brazilian Henrique Cunha in the first round. The biggest upset on Tuesday was the surprising 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 second round defeat of former World Junior No.1 Jonathan Eysseric to Australian-born Andrew Thomas, playing under the Cyrpiot flag, who is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Cyprus's most famed sports presonality, two-time boys’ US Open runner-up Marcos Baghdatis.
