| Junior US Open Preview |
The final junior Grand Slam of the year gets underway next week, as top players join their professional counterparts at Flushing Meadows to contest the 2007 junior US Open.
Defending Champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (RUS) will be favourite to win the girls’ event and add a fourth Grand Slam title to her already impressive collection. The Russian, who has a WTA ranking of 290, has a 22-3 record this year and will be hard to beat on her favourite surface.
The main threat could come from world No.2 Urszula Radwanska (POL), who lost only one set on her way to becoming Wimbledon Champion this year, beating Pavlyuchenkova on her way to the title. Ksenia Milevskaya (BLR) is the only player to beat Radwanska in 2007 and was semifinalist in Australia and at Roland Garros. Madison Brengle (USA), playing on home soil, will also be among the favourites, having reached the final in Australia and at Wimbledon.
2006 semifinalist Lauren Albanese (USA) could also be a contender, with a WTA ranking of 236, while Nikola Hofmanova (AUT) and Ksenia Pervak (RUS) have tasted success on the circuit but are yet to make the breakthrough at Grand Slam level.
Roland Garros Champion Uladzimir Ignatik (BLR) will look to cement his position as world No.1 by winning the boys’ event. However, 2005 World Champion Donald Young (USA) beat Ignatik in the final at Wimbledon, and could challenge again for the top spot with victory next week. Young’s ATP ranking of 223 is sure to improve following his performance in the main draw this week and he could be hard to beat in front of a supportive US crowd.
Matteo Trevisan picked up three titles during the European clay court season and has proven himself strong on all surfaces. However the world No.2 will be hoping not to meet Greg Jones (AUS) in the draw, as the Australian has eliminated him in the latter stages of all three of this year’s Grand Slams.
Fernando Romboli (BRA) looks most at home on clay but has also proved he has the tools to perform on hard courts, having dominated this year’s South American circuit. Australian Open finalist Jonathan Eysseric (FRA) is another contender, with two titles to his name in 2007 as well as having recently lead France to victory in the European Summer Cups.
