Larcher de Brito ousts Chernyakova in Milan
The second round was completed at the Italian Open yesterday, and the mass exodus of seeds which characterised the first two days has slowed down. The boys’ and girls’ draw both saw just one upset yesterday, with Michelle Larcher de Brito’s defeat of fourth seed Elena Chernyakova (RUS) the big news of the day.

Larcher de Brito’s 36 63 75 win may not be as big an upset as it at first seems. The 14-year-old from Portugal may be yet to win a Grade 1 or above tournament on the ITF junior circuit, but she has already won a match at WTA Tour level, and reached her first Grade 1 final at Santa Croce last week. Chernyakova, in contrast, although ranked in the top twenty has not been in her best form of late, having lost her opening match in six of her last seven tournaments before arriving in Milan.

Elsewhere in the girls’ event sixth seed Irina Camelia Begu (ROM) and 13th seed Klaudia Boczova (SVK) made it through to the last 16 with wins over Chen Astrugo (ISR) and Alenka Hubacek (AUS) respectively.

Number eight Hsien-Ying Peng (TPE) was the only boys’ seed to fall, a 67(3) 16 loser to Croatia’s Goran Rozic. Peng is the current Asian champion, but like many of his fellow Asians his best results have come on hard courts. Rozic next takes on American ninth seed Rhyne Williams, who needed a third set tie-break to get past Chile’s Rodrigo Perez. Williams has now won 13 of his last 14 matches, and has already made this year’s Italian Open the best clay-court tournament of
his junior career.

Williams will be joined in the last 16 by his fellow American Kellen Damico, seeded three. Damico knocked out Italian qualifier Lorenzo Papasidero 75 64 and next plays Patricio Alvarado of Ecuador.

Fourth seed Matteo Trevisan is still keeping Italian hopes alive after he defeated Daniel Cox (GBR) 62 63. His next opponent will be Slovenia’s Janez Semrajc, who followed up his first round win over 14th seed Lofo Ramiaramanana (MAD) with a straightforward 60 64 over Neil Pauffley (GBR).
