| Rivera-Aranguiz crashes out on day three |
Having scraped through his opening match against world number 1303 Bernardo Dias (BRA) in three sets, Rivera-Aranguiz was clearly not playing the best tennis of his young career. However, having reached three consecutive finals at the beginning of 2007, as well as the quarterfinals at last week’s Grade 1 Banana Bowl, the third seed may have expected to scrape through a couple more matches before finding some form in the latter stages. Unfortunately for Rivera-Aranguiz his second round opponent had only dropped four games in his opening match and was in no mood to be beaten by the out-of-form Chilean. Stabile clinched victory in straight sets, 63 64, claiming the biggest scalp of the tournament so far.
Other top seeds in the boys’ event faired slightly better, as the top two ranked players, Roman Jebavy (CZE) and Fernando Romboli (BRA), both booked their place in the third round. Jebavy beat France’s Axel Michon 63 64, while Romboli knocked out promising Bulgarian Gueorguei Roumenov 62 63. Fourth seed Stephane Piro (FRA), who has reached the final of his previous four tournaments, picking up two titles and boosting his ranking to nine, also made it through, beating Lazare Kukhalashvili (GEO) 63 64.
Not so fortunate was seventh seed Rupesh Roy (IND), who took the opening set of his match against Antonio Comporto (ITA) before losing 46 62 75. Ninth seed Mateusz Kecki (USA) was outplayed by Jerome Inzerillo (FRA), losing 64 60, while twelfth seed Roberto Maytin (VEN) suffered a crippling 61 61 defeat to Joao Sousa (POR).
Having had his opening match postponed due to rain, Britain’s David Rice was forced to play two singles matches on day three. In his first round match the fourteenth seed came from behind to defeat wildcard Gustavo Guerses (BRA) 36 61 61. Then, in his second match of the day, Rice cruised past Robert Coman (ROU) 61 64.
The girls’ event in Porto Alegre is notable for its lack of upsets. Of the sixteen seeds originally in the draw, an impressive thirteen have made it through to the third round. The only seeded player eliminated in round two was South African tenth seed Monica Gorny, who lost in straight sets to Paraguayan Veronica Cepede, 64 61.
Elsewhere, the majority of the seeds made it through without dropping a set. Exceptions to this were Tetyana Arefeyeva (UKR, seeded thirteen), who went a set down before beating qualifier Melissa Valenzuela (PER) 46 63 64, and Bojana Jovanovski (SRB, seeded sixteen), who struggled briefly against Marina Giral (VEN) before coming through 61 57 62.
Third seed Tamaryn Hendler (BEL), like Rice in the boys’ draw, had to play two matches in one day, easily beat Monica Pezzotti (COL) 61 62 in the first round. In round two, however, the bad weather and the punishing schedule seemed to take their toll, as Hendler struggled into round three with a very close three-setter against Joanna Mather (USA), which ended 75 26 75 in favour of the Belgian.
