20 Mar 2007 - ITF - James McGurran
Play Underway at the Copa Gerdau
Following the loss of eighth seed Jonny Hamui (USA) who crashed out on day one, the progress of the remaining seeds in action on day two was checked by some strong opposition, with three seeds losing and several of the top seeds being pushed to a third set before claiming their places in the next round.

The biggest upset was the departure of fifth seed Henrique Cunha (BRA). Grigor Dimitrov (BUL), ranked 133 in the world, came from a set down to defeat the fifth seed Cunha 57 64 62. Meanwhile, Eleventh seed Alejandro Gonzalez (COL) lost on a final set tie break to Wild Card entrant Rafael Garcia (BRA) 63 16 76(1), and sixteenth seed Kevin Botti (FRA) was beaten 64 64 by Marcelo Arevalo (ESA).

Top seed Roman Jebavy (CZE) progressed to the second round despite an difficult first match, in which his opponent Ty Trombetta (USA) took the first set, before Jebavy was able to impose himself to win 46 64 62. Meanwhile Romboli (BRA, seeded second), Piro (FRA, seeded fourth), Urzua Rivera (CHI, seeded sixth) and Maytin (VEN, seeded twelfth) all won in straight sets.

In the girls event, all but one of the seeds playing on day two won their matches. The only loss was twelfth seed Tatiana Bua (ARG), defeated 75 75 by Russian Nanuli Pipiya. Whilst fifth seed Malena Gordo (ARG) was pushed to three sets by qualifier Lais Ogata (BRA), the Brazilian was not able to copy Berkenbrock's heroics of day one. Having won the first set 57, Ogata was beaten easily in the second set, 60, and eventually succumbed to Gordo 57 60 62.

All other seeded players in action, Vaisemberg (BRA, second seed), Ivan (ROU, fourth seed), Gorny (RSA, tenth seed), Damaschin (ROU, fourteenth seed) and Cecil (USA, fiftennth seed) won their first round matches in straight sets, with top seed Reka Zsilinska (USA) beating Naydeonva (BUL) 62 60.
