Mixed Fortunes for Americans at Orange Bowl
Tuesday was a disappointing day for American seeds in the boys’ draw of the Orange Bowl, with all three of those in action being knocked out of the tournament. The much-anticipated match-up between third seed Kellen Damico and US Open finalist Peter Polansky (CAN) didn’t live up to expectations, with Damico suffering from illness and unable to mount a serious challenge. Eighth seed Nathaniel Schnugg, known more as probably the best doubles player on the junior circuit, went down in straight sets to his fellow American Brennan Boyajian, while Dennis Lajola, seeded 13, was ousted by Brazil’s Fernando Romboli. Romboli’s fellow Brazilian Pedro Zerbini caused the day’s other upset when he defeated 11th seed Lofo Ramiaramanan of Madagascar.

In contrast to the boys, the US girls had a good day yesterday with eight players making it through to the second round. Fourth seed Julia Cohen led the way with a straight sets win over Kim Alice Grajdek (GER), while her fellow seed Madison Brengle (12) eased past qualifier Anna Fitzpatrick of Great Britain. The biggest upset of the day was caused by Melanie Oudin, who defeated 15th seed Elena Chernyakova (RUS) for the loss of just two games.

The winners of last week’s Eddie Herr tournament are still going strong, with Nicolas Santos (BRA) and Urszula Radwanska (POL) both claiming straight sets wins yesterday. Santos, the top seed and world number four, had little trouble in dismissing Thailand’s Perakiat Siriluethaiwattana 62 63, while Radwanska, seeded seven, ousted American Chelsey Gullickson 62 64. Santos, who is aiming to finish his junior career with a first Grade A title, has now won 14 of his last 15 matches on the ITF junior circuit, and is certainly the man to beat this week. Radwanska, although she has not played as regularly on the junior circuit, has compiled a 25-3 record in 2006 and could well pose a threat to tournament favourite Ksenia Milevskaya (BLR) should they meet as expected in the quarter-finals.
