Polansky K.Os Klizan in New York
Canada’s Peter Polansky blew a hole in the boys’ draw at the US Open on Wednesday by knocking out the tournament’s top seed, Slovak Martin Klizan. Polansky, who is playing his last junior grand slam before joining into the professional ranks, beat Klizan 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to earn a place in the third round.

I thought I had a good chance before the match and I thought I could win,” said Polansky. “I have been playing well lately and my ATP ranking is already 850 and so I felt very confident. Ranking-wise it’s one of the best wins I’ve had in juniors so it was a really good win and great motivation for the rest of the tournament.”

Polansky plays Poland’s Marcin Gawron, who reached the junior Wimbledon final in July, for a place in the quarter-finals. “He’s pretty tough so I know I’m still going to have to play well. I feel very good about my game. I just need to go out there and keep playing the way I have been this week and last week. Before this tournament I felt confident that I could do well and maybe make the semis or better, so we’ll just have to see how things turn out. I still really want to do well before I stop playing juniors but I don’t feel under too much pressure right now.”

The hustle and bustle of the US Open doesn’t suit all players but Polansky says that he enjoys the noise and hurly burly of the final grand slam of the season. “I still need to get a bit more used this surface but I like it. I kind of like the atmosphere at the US Open,” said Polansky. “I can ignore the distractions and there aren’t too many tournaments where you get a crowd like this. It’s great to be in this environment with all the crowds around and being in amongst the pros.”

In other boys’ results, American favourite Donald Young beat Brazil’s Fernando Romboli 7-5, 6-3; third seeded Brazilian Nicolas Santos also moved through to round three. Croatia’s Luca Belic and the Czech Republic’s Roman Jebavy also progressed.

In the girls’ draw, the USA’s Madison Brengle scored a major upset by beating seventh seed Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-3, 6-3. Top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia avoided a similar fate by battling from a set down to beat Austria’s Melanie Klaffner 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.

Great Britain’s Jade Curtis scored one of her biggest wins in the juniors when she beat Poland’s Urszula Radwanska 6-3, 6-1. Radwanska was seeded 14th but Curtis said afterwards that she wasn’t shocked by her victory. “It’s one of my best wins in juniors in regards to ranking but I wouldn’t say I was surprised with the way I played because I knew I could play that level, I just haven’t been performing as well as I can in juniors. I’ve been coming for quite a while, I’ve been getting more positive and not trying to focus on the outcome and focusing on my gameplan instead. Today was a good win for me because I actually played the way I can do in training, and that’s what made it satisfying.”
