10 Aug 2006 - Prostejov, Czech Republic - Isabelle Gemmel and Anna Reed
Another Coria makes his mark in Prostejov
Thanks to good weather for the first time in a week, a full schedule of ties has been played on the clay courts of TK Prostejov. Spirits were high today as the sun shone brightly and teams played the full 6 games. While some nations looked to make up for yesterday’s disappointments, others sought to continue their winning streak.

GIRLS

In Group A, Netherlands looked strong again today and overpowered Indonesia, winning all matches and securing a 30 win in the tie.

In the other Group A tie, No. 1 seed France took on No. 8 seed USA. In the first singles, France beat USA, though in a challenging second match, USA triumphed in three sets. The deciding doubles was a tense match, eventually won by France in the third set, securing them a 21 overall victory in the tie.

Group B saw Chile take on No. 4 seed Ukraine. Following on from yesterday’s victory, Ukraine won the tie 30 winning all matches in two sets, though the second match was closely fought between Nadiya Kichenok and Camila Silva, eventually resulting in a 75 64 victory for the Ukraine.

This afternoon saw the second tie between Uzbekistan and South Africa. Uzbekistan continued yesterday’s success beating South Africa 30 in their tie. South Africa put up an impressive fight in the doubles, losing in a second set tie-break.

On Centre Court, No. 6 seed Russia were again in good form and upset higher seeded Poland, winning both singles matches and then taking the doubles, in a close two set match. With another 30 victory under their belts, Russia should be feeling confident before their final tie with Thailand tomorrow.

The other Group C nations, Argentina and Thailand, played a tight first match, with the first set going to tie break, eventually won by Argentina. Thailand put up another strong fight in the next match, though again beaten in the end. Despite their victory in the doubles, Thailand still lost the tie 21.

Canada took on the home team in the day’s first Group D tie. After two fairly close singles matches, Czech Republic and Canada were at one all. The deciding doubles was won in two sets by Canada and gave them a 21 advantage in the tie.

China’s Group D opponents, No. 7 seed Paraguay started off strongly with Isabella Robbiani beating China’s Yi Zhing in two sets. The tables were turned for the second singles as Xi Bai triumphed over Veronica Cepede in a challenging three set match. Again, everything depended on the teams’ performance in the doubles and it was China to triumph and seal a 21 victory in the tie.

BOYS

In the boys event, Group A saw Russia and China marching on in their quest for the semi-finals, setting up a deciding match between the two teams by defeating respectively Venezuela and Spain. Even the skills of the outstanding Carlos Beluda (ESP) were not enough to stop the Chinese, who won the deciding doubles.

To the delight of the spectators the Czech boys also continued their winning streak by defeating the Indian team 30 and they will now face Italy tomorrow in a match deciding the winner of Group B. Italy won their match against Mexico, but had to go the distance, as Federico Gaio (ITA) lost his singles against the Mexican number one player Rodrigo Ferraez. Gaio and Giacomo Miccini won the deciding doubles in straight sets.

Group C is the most interesting after two days of competition. Japan is head of the group after their 30 victory over Morocco, but both Brazil and Germany’s hopes are still alive. Germany managed to overcome Brazil 21 and thus is hoping for a Brazilian victory tomorrow over Japan, which would leave all three teams with two victories and one defeat. Japan however would secure their place in the semifinal by a victory in their match against Brazil.

In Group D, Argentina tried to come back after yesterday’s defeat against Hungary when playing against New Zealand. Federico Coria, the younger brother of Guillermo Coria, made his debut at the World Junior Tennis Finals exactly 10 years after his famous brother had played and won the finals in 1996. Federico Coria defeated Ben McLachlan 61 63. Despite being 10 behind, the New Zealand team still secured overall victory when Sebastian Lavie won in three sets against Agustin Velotti and then went on with his partner McLachlan to win the deciding doubles 63 62.

This puts the unseeded team of New Zealand in the position to play for a place in the Semifinals. They will do so against the eighth seed Hungary who defeated the USA in one of the longest ties of the day.

Raymond Sarmiento lost the opening tie to Marton Fucsovics (HUN) in three sets, before Ryan Harrison equalised with a straight set win against Mate Zsiga. Hungary used the fresh number three player Levente Godry for the doubles while the USA kept their singles players. This might have given the Hungarian pair the little edge of freshness to win the doubles 75 in the third set after a nail-biting contest.
