The 16th World Junior Tennis Finals will get underway tomorrow on the clay courts at TK Prostejov in the Morava region of Czech Republic.

For the eighth consecutive year, the club is hosting the official ITF team competition for boys and girls aged 14 & under. From a total of 85 countries, 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams representing 27 nations fought their way through regional qualifying competitions for the chance to compete here and vie for a place in Saturday’s Final.

Girls’ Champions in 2005, Russia, (then led by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, currently ITF Junior World Ranking No. 1), have returned this year and will be hoping to repeat last year’s success, although their team does not start as favourite this year. The winning Boys’ team of 2005, France, however failed to qualify following their defeat by the Russian Boys’ team in the pre-qualifying event in France last month.

In boys’ competition, Russia is seeded No. 1, following their victory in the European Summer Cup (the final stage for the European qualifying). USA, champions of 2002 and 2003 are seeded No. 2 while Germany and Italy make up places 3 and 4 in the seeding. Czech Republic, is seeded No. 6 and will be hoping to make the most of their home advantage.

In the girls’ competition, No. 1 seed France will be hoping to repeat the French boys’ team success in last year’s tournament. They will face challenges from the Canadian team, seeded No. 2, whilst traditionally strong Eastern European girls’ teams, Poland and Ukraine, complete the top four seeds.

Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters and Amelie Mauresmo are among the greats who once played World Junior Tennis. Players this week will be hoping to emulate their sporting heroes and take their first steps along the road to becoming champions.
