Top Seeds Remain On Course In Milan
Fourteen year-old Paylyuchenkova dropped just two games in her third round match against Syna Kayser of Germany. The Australian Open Champion now boasts a 28-1 win-loss record for 2006 and remains a strong favourite to claim her tenth ITF Junior Circuit title at the weekend. The Russian’s next opponent is seventh seed Sacha Jones (NZL), who reached the quarterfinal stage with a 64 63 win over Valeria Pulido Velasco (MEX).

Second seeded Romanian Olaru also put in another strong performance, winning 63 62 against Brazilian Roxanne Vaisemberg. The Romanian reached the final of this event last year and will be determined to go one step better this time round. In the last eight Olaru will face Ukrainian eighth seed Khrystyna Antoniychuk, wo beat Ana Veselinovic (SCG) 64 62.

Also through to the quarterfinals of the girls’ draw are Sorana Cirstea (ROM), seeded four, who beat Natalia Orlova (RUS) 64 61 and now faces Sharon Fichman (CAN), who won 62 62 against Ksenia Milevskaya (BLR). Home favourite Corinna Dentoni seeded six eventually made the last eight with a 75 63 victory over Katerina Vankova (CZE) and will now face Alexandra Panova (RUS) for place in the semifinals.

The boys’ draw, by contrast, has only three seeds remaining in the last eight. Second seed Nicolas Santos from Brazil remains title favourite after winning 64 75 over Estonian Jaak Poldma. The world number five from Sao Paolo has won three high-ranking ITF Junior events in South America but has yet to register a tournament victory outside his home continent. Victory here would further boost his world ranking and improve his seeding at Junior Roland Garros, which starts on June 3rd. In the quarterfinals Santos faces Japanese Kei Nishikori, who made it through after his opponent, Antonio Veic (CRO), was forced to retire while trailing in the deciding set, with the score at 75 06 43.

Fourth seed Croatian Luka Belic, booked his place in the last eight with a victory over big-serving American Kellen Damico, 64 64, and must now play Nikola Mektic (CRO), while Roman Jebavy (CZE) beat Peter Lucassen (NED) in three sets, 64 36 61 and will now face Lebanese Bassam Beidas.

Also through is Jonathan Eysseric of France, who came through a tough match against Swiss Dylan Sessagesimi. After sharing the first two sets, which both went to a tiebreak, it was Esseric who broke early in the third and went on to win 67(6) 76(2) 62. His next opponent is Brazilian Joao Silva, who cruised through his match against Valentin Dimov (BUL), 61 60.
