| Milan Draws Left Wide Open |
Day two at the 47th Trofeo Bonfiglio saw more seeded players eliminated from both the boys and girls competitions, leaving whole sections of the draw open for lower ranked players to make a name for themselves.
Swiss Dylan Sessagesimi continued his impressive run of form. Having knocked out top seed and world number two Thiemo de Bakker in the first round, he scored a double bagel in round two against New Zealand’s Austen Childs. With only two seeds remaining in the top half of the draw, the world number 62 will fancy his chances of being involved in the latter stages of the event.
Fourth seed Luca Belic successfully negotiated round two with a victory over Italian wildcard Antonio Comporto. After a close opening set the Croatian cruised to victory, 75 61, and will now face either Andrej Martin (SVK) or Kellen Damico (USA) for a spot in the quarterfinals. Czech Roman Jebavy, seeded 15, came through a first set tie break before beating Christian Vitulli of Kenya 76(1) 63 to make it through to round three.
Other seeds in the boys’event were not so fortunate. Eighth seed Kevin Botti, winner of the 2005 Junior Davis Cup with France, went out in three sets to Bassam Beidas from the Lebanon, 62 36 63, while Paris Gemouchidis (GRE) came from a set down to beat Swiss ninth seed Robin Roshardt, 46 63 62.
In the girls’ event, Romanian Sorana Cirstea, seeded four, took three sets to overcome Anouk Tigu of the Netherlands, 63 46 62, while seventh seeded New Zealander Sacha Jones also needed a deciding set to gain victory over local wildcard Giulia Remondina, 46 64 62.
Ninth seed Sharon Fichman (CAN) eventually overwhelmed Katerina Kramperova (CZE) in straight sets, 64 60, and now faces Belorussian Ksenia Milevskaya for a place in the last eight. Milevskaya owns a 38-6 record on the ITF Junior Circuit (9-1 so far this year) and will be a tough match for the Canadian.
Seeds who lost on day two of the girls event include Bibiane Schoofs of the Netherlands, who was beaten 60 67(2) 62 by lucky loser Ana Veselinovic (SCG), and Michaela Pochabova (SVK), who managed to win just one game during her loss to Russian Alexandra Panova, 60 61.
