| 2006 kicks off at the Casablanca Cup |
Julia Cohen (USA) and Thiemo de Bakker (NED) made the perfect start to the new year with victories at the first Grade A tournament of 2006, the Casablanca Cup in Mexico.
Sixteen year old Cohen becomes the first player to win the girls singles title twice in Mexico, her first victory came in 2004, whilst the 2006 title came at the expense of Dutch girl Marrit Boonstra 26 64 64.
The American had to overcome three Dutch players en route to the title, and despite a shaky start against Boonstra, managed to find her way through in three sets. The victory will see Cohen heading back towards the ranking top ten, a spot she hasn’t seen since February 2004.
Thiemo de Bakker started the Dutch enslaught on the titles by defeating Brazilian Nicolas Santos in the boys’ singles final 62 61. At the 2005 Casablanca Cup de Bakker was defeated in the semifinals by USA’s Donald Young, who went on to win the title and end 2005 as the ITF Junior World Champion, no doubt de Bakker will be hoping to follow in Young’s footsteps. The Dutch Boy has definitely made the best possible start to 2006, he also scooped the doubles title with fellow Dutch boy Peter Lucassen defeating USA’s Kellen Damico and Nathanial Shnugg 64 57 64.
The tournament certainly bought luck to the Dutch when Marrit Boonstra gained some revenge over Julia Cohen with victory in the doubles with partner Renee Reinhard. The Dutch pair ended Mexican hopes of a victory by defeating Cohen and her Mexican partner Valeria Pulido 75 63.
