| Orange Bowl Day Three Washed Out |
With its long and rich history, the Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships is filled with tradition. Unfortunately, the third day of the 59th edition of the event was lost to one of the most unfavorable traditions at the Orange Bowl -- rain. Not one match scheduled for Wednesday was played to completion.
The day off for everyone means that both the second and third rounds of singles will be contested on Thursday in addition to the second round of doubles.
The boys start things off with all sixteen second round matches scheduled for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. followed by the girls' second round action.
The second round of both the boys' and girls' draws each feature three matches between opponents who have squared off previously on the ITF Circuit, including rematches for the No. 1 seeds in both draws.
Poland's Agniezska Radwanska will look to avenge a second round loss at the US Open to Elizabeth Plotkin when the two meet in the second round here. The top seed here this week, Radwanska was the No. 2 seed in New York this summer when the two players last met. The winner of today's match advances to play either Russian Arina Rodionova or No. 15 seed Roxane Vaisemberg of Brazil.
World No. 1 Donald Young defeated his second round opponent Alberto Gonzalez in the quarterfinals of the Eddie Herr International last year in three sets. If he defeats the Panamanian again, he could face No. 16 seed Nikola Mektic for the first time in the third round. Mektic faces American Jamie Hunt in the second round.
No. 5 seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark won both previous matches against Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer, most recently in the second round of the Thailand International Junior Championships in March.
The only other rematch in the girls' second round includes No. 16 seed Julia Cohen and Serbia & Montenegro's Teodora Mircic. Mircic defeated Cohen in the quarterfinals of the 2003 Inka Bowl on clay.
On the boys' side, No. 6 seed Dusan Lojda of the Czech Republic will face Romania's Petru Luncanu for the second time in less than a week. The two players met in the quarterfinals of the Eddie Herr International last week, with Lojda prevailing in straight sets.
No. 15 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan split two previous meetings with his second round opponent, Switzerland's Yann Marti in the only other rematch in the boys second round.
