Oh Canada! Fichman upsets Gambale in New York
Canadian prodigy Sharon Fichman made her presence felt in the US Open juniors on Wednesday, knocking eighth-seeded American Mary Gambale out of the tournament with a gutsy 06 75 64 victory to earn a place in the last 16 of a grand slam in singles for the first time.

The 14-year-old, who plays Belarusian Olga Govortsova in the next round, has long been considered something of a rising star in her home town of Toronto and last year received an extensive write up in the Toronto Sun newspaper, despite the fact that she was barely 13 at the time. In the article, Fichman told the newspaper that she dreams of being the best player in the world one day, saying “That has been my goal for a while, I’d love to be able to travel and make a living out of tennis.”

Fichman, whose father Bobby is a nuclear engineer, is a huge fan of 2003 US Open women’s champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, whose achievements she would like to emulate one day. “I’ve been a fan ever since she won the US Open,” Fichman said in the interview. “There is just something special about her. Her will, her mental strength set her apart.”

Fichman needed some strength of her own to come back from a set down to Gambale and include herself amongst the roster of favourites for the title. Californian Vania King certainly falls into that category after notching up another emphatic win. Tenth-seeded King, who beat fellow American Madison Brengle 60 61 has dropped just one game in her first two matches in New York, a statistic which will make sombre reading for her next opponent, New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic.

Erakovic was in convincing form herself on Wednesday, beating Gail Brodsky of the USA 61 61. Top seed and reigning Australian Open girls’ champion Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus also cruised through, easing past Czech Katerina Kramperova 61 62 to set up a third round meeting with Renee Reinhard of the Netherlands.

In boys’ action, top seed Donald Young of the USA had to come from a set down for the second day in a row. Young, who was pushed to a decider by Philip Bester of Canada on Tuesday, eventually beat Venezuela’s David Navarrete 46 62 60 and meets his compatriot Matt Bruch next. Bruch was a 36 64 63 winner over India’s Rupesh Roy.

Another American, Holden Seguso, continued his progress through the tournament with a 76 61 victory over Lukas Lacko of Slovakia.

California’s Sam Querrey and Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer will play one of the juicier ties of the round of 16 after both notched up straight sets wins. Querrey beat Croatia’s Luka Belic 63 63, while Mayer was a 76 64 winner over Dusan Lojda of the Czech Republic.

Roland Garros champion Marin Cilic of Croatia, Korea’s Australian Open runner-up Sun-Yong Kim and Ryan Sweeting of the Bahamas all joined Querrey and Mayer in the last 16.
