Two more regional qualifying events in the ITF Junior Team Competitions were staged last week. The Asia/Oceania Junior Fed Cup qualifying event was held in Bangkok, Thailand, and the South America World Junior Tennis qualifying event took place in Santa Catarina, Brazil.
Fifteen nations took part in Bangkok, with China, Australia and China Hong Kong qualifying for the Junior Fed Cup Finals, which will be held in Barcelona from 27 September to 2 October. Top seed China defeated second seed Australia in the qualifying final, and will now bid to surpass its eighth place finish at the 2004 finals. China Hong Kong won the third place play-off against New Zealand to qualify for the Finals for the first time in its history.
Ten nations took part in both the girls’ and boys’ event in Santa Catarina, seeking a place in the World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic on 8-13 August. Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador went on to qualify for the boys’ finals, while Chile, Peru and Ecuador qualified for the girls’ finals.
There will be a further qualifying event this week, with the Asia/Oceania World Junior Tennis qualifying held in Melbourne, Australia.
