| 2005 ITF Junior Team Competitions - Qualifying kicks off |
The first of the qualifying events for the 2005 ITF Junior Team Competitions were completed in Africa and El Salvador.
The pre-qualifying event for the World Junior Tennis Finals, to be held in Prostejov, Czech Republic from 8-13 August, was held in El Salvador, and saw Puerto Rico’s boys and El Salvador’s girls secure places for the final qualifying phase in Mazanillo, Mexico from 6-8 May. South Africa’s boys team and Algeria’s girls team booked their places for the finals in Czech Republic, coming through adverse weather conditions at the qualifying event held at the African Junior Championships in Mauritius.
Also in Mauritius, teams were competing for qualifying places for the for the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and Junior Fed Cup Finals, to take place in Barcelona, Spain from 27 September – 2 October. South Africa and Tunisia claimed the first two spots for the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final, whilst Morocco and South Africa will be represented in the Junior Fed Cup Final. Guatemala’s Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams have secured places in the final qualifying competition in the North/Central American & Caribbean region after winning the pre-qualifying event on home soil. The event was held on the hard courts of the Aurora Tennis Club in Guatemala City, with nine teams competing in both the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and Junior Fed Cup. In the Junior Fed Cup pre-qualifying final, No. 1 seed Guatemala saw off the unseeded team of Cuba 2-1, with Kiristen Weedon winning both her singles and doubles matches. In the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas pre-qualifying final, top seeded Guatemala also needed the deciding doubles to see off No. 3 seed Puerto Rico, who had upset second seed El Salvador the previous day. Guatemala joins Canada, USA and Mexico in the final qualifying event for both competitions in Manzanillo, Mexico on 6-8 May. The next regional qualifying event will be Junior Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Qualifying event in the Philippines on 2-7 May as well as the South American Qualifying event for both the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and Junior Fed Cup in Paraguay on 2-7 May.
