| Koreans Advance To Final As Chan Bows Out |
Dominika Cibulkova ousted top seed Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei in a tight semifinal match in the girls singles of the Osaka Mayors Cup. The fourth-seeded Slovak player reached her first Grade A final with a 64 64 victory.
Chan’s compatriot, Wen-Hsin Hsu, fared little better as she was beaten 64 62 by Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, who continued her impressive progress this year, also reaching her first final at this level, with a comprehensive victory over the third seed.
In contrast, the boys’ semifinals went to plan with the Korean pair of Sun-Yong Kim and Woong-Sun Jun advancing to their appointed places in the final. Top seeded Kim dismissed third seed Chu-Huan Yi, who became the third player from Chinese Taipei to lose today, 62 64 with a vastily improved display from his quarterfinal match.h
Jun, seeded two, recovered from a first set loss to defeat Ukraine’s Sergei Bubka 46 61 63 and will now bid to overturn a five-match losing streak against his compatriot in Sunday’s final.
One of the Korean boys will depart from Osaka a double champion as the pair combined to lift the doubles title with a 64 46 64 triumph over the British-Kuwaiti team of Myles Blake and Abdullah Magdas.
Japanese fans were thrilled as Megumi Fukui and Kaori Meuzawa fought back to take the girls’ doubles title when defeating Australian duo Michelle Brycki and Shayna MacDowell 63 26 64.
