| Rain makes Wednesday an inside story |
There were familiar scenes at the US Open on Wednesday when steady rain fell throughout the day, washing out the day session on all courts and sending all junior matches indoors.
With a pessimistic weather forecast for Thursday too US Open tournament organisers had no option but to have all junior matches played indoors on both days.
The switch from the USTA National Tennis Centre to the South Shore Indoor Tennis Center didn’t seem to do Coen Van Keulen of the Netherlands any harm. He scored the day’s biggest upset by knocking out fifth-seeded Floridian Brendan Evans with a surprise 76 46 64 victory. Van Keulen now plays another American, Sam Querrey, who was given a wildcard into the main draw.
There was more success for third seed Scotland’s Andrew Murray when he skipped past Vahid Mirzadeh of the USA 61 62 to set up a third round clash against voluble New Zealander William Ward. Ward had to come from a set down to ease past American wildcard Timothy Smyczek 26 63 64. Ward’s fellow New Zealander GD Jones was beaten 62 61 by second seed Andreas Beck of Germany. Murray is the third Briton through to the last sixteen, along with Wimbledon finalist Miles Kasiri and Jamie Baker, who beat Oleksadnr Nedovesov of the Ukraine 76 64. Murray’s brother Jamie is out of the tournament, beaten 75 75 by Eduardo Schwank of Argentina.
Schwank now faces 10th seed Scoville Jenkins of the USA after Jenkins beat his compatriot Timothy Neilly 62 63 to clinch his place in the third round.
In the girls’ draw Ukrainian Katerina Bondarenko and Israel’s Shahar Peer both continued their quests for a second Grand Slam title with straight sets wins in their second round matches. No. 6 seed Yung-Jan Chan from China and No.15 seed Alisa Kleybanova from Russia both went out, defeated by Ekaterina Kosminskaya from Romania and Vojislava Lukic from Serbia & Montenegro respectively. Marina Erakovic from New Zealand, Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak and Romania’s Monica Niculescu also progressed to the last 16.
