| Surprises Continue At World Junior Tennis Final |
The Austrian girls team surprised second seed USA 2-1 to throw Group Four of the girls’ competition wide open. Austria narrowly lost to Italy on the first day and took to court determined to pull off an upset and put itself back in contention.
Melanie Klaffner defeated Courtney Clayton in just under 90 minutes to take the first point of the tie in a match, which contained frequent breaks of serve. Nicola Hofmanova fought off a late rally by Madison Brengle, who almost retrieved a 4-0 deficit in the second set, to record a 61 64 victory. The win was cheered by a small, but vociferous band of Austrian supporters whose chants echoed across the complex. The USA then won what could prove to be a crucial doubles rubber to make the overall score 2-1.
Indonesia also caused an upset in the other match of the group with a 2-1 defeat of Italy. After splitting the singles, Luftiana Budhiarto and Jessy Rompies clinched a tight doubles rubber against Claudia Giovine and Roxana Vaideanu 64 76(5) to win the tie. All four nations in this group now have one win from two ties so everything is to play for on Wednesday before the team going forward to the semifinals is decided
There was further bad news for the United States when their boys’ team went down 3-0 to Thailand. Thailand now only need to overcome Argentina tomorrow to reach the semifinals of World Junior Tennis for the first time.
After a tense first set, Thai No.2, Peekapach Tupwong outplayed USA’s Mateusz Kecki, winning 76(3) 61. In the match between the two No.1 players, Kittipong Wachiramanowong won 10 of the last 11 games for a 63 61 victory against Waylon Chin to seal the tie. In the other boys’ matches, top seed France was a comfortable 3-0 winner against Venezuela and now faces Great Britain on Wednesday with the winner assured of a semifinal place. The Czech boys followed up their victory against Australia on Monday with a 2-1 success against Germany and are the first boys' team into the semifinals. The remaining spot will go to the winners of the Italy v Croatia tie, both teams being undefeated so far.
The Slovak Republic girls’ team again demonstrated why they are seeded No.1 with a quick-fire 3-0 victory over Korea. As on the first day they were the first team to secure victory with each of the singles rubbers completed in under 45 minutes. They now face eighth seeds Mexico to determine which team advances to the semifinal stages from Group One.
Fourth seed Czech Republic delighted the Centre Court crowd with a comprehensive victory over Peru. The Peruvians, tired from a long, tense battle with Argentina on Monday, did not show their best form in a 3-0 defeat. Courtesy of this success, the Czechs have already qualified for the semifinals.
Australia and Belarus will contest the qualification place from Group Two after both countries recorded their second victories.
