| Order Restored In Italy |
After the surprises of yesterday, order was restored as all matches went to form today at the 45th Trofeo Bonfiglio in Milan.
In the girls' singles, No.2 seed Sesil Karatancheva wasted little time as she double-bagelled Irina Kotkina, of Russia, seeded six, to reach the semifinals. The Bulgarian, who is already ranked inside the world's top 200 in the professional game, now faces Kateryna Bondarenko, of the Ukraine, seeded three, who beat Belarusian Volha Havartsova for the second week running. This time, however, it was a lot closer but the Ukrainian finally sealed a 62 46 75 victory to set up a chance to avenge her three-set defeat at the hands of Karatancheva last week in Santa Croce.
Defending champion, Michaella Krajicek had to come from behind to beat the unseeded Russian, Regina Kulikova, 26 61 63. The Dutch player will take on Victoria Azarenka, from Belarus, in Saturday's semifinals after the Belarusian eliminated Canada's Sharon Fichman 64 57 62. This is the first Grade A semifinal for Azarenka and the second time that she has faced Krajicek, who comfortably won their previous meeting last year.
Hopes of a home victory in the boys' singles disappeared as second seed, Sebastian Rieschick, of Germany dismissed Fabio Fognini, whose nerves apperaed to get the better of him, 61 63. In his first-ever Grade A semifinal, he will face third seed, Brendan Evans, of USA. Evans ended the good run of qualifier, Gregory Ouelette with a comprehensive 62 62 victory. The American will bid for a place in his first Grade A final tomorrow.
Ukrainian Sergei Bubka, who put out top seed Mihail Zverev, of Germany, continued his great form to win his quarterfinal with Igor Sijsling 67 62 63 and advance to a semifinal against Juan Del Potro, of Argentina, who, is the youngest of the four semifinalists. The Argentinian enjoyed a 64 63 victory over Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci
