| Easy for Zverev in Milan |
Top seed Mihail Zverev wasted little time in advancing to the second round of the 45th Trofeo Bonfiglio Italian Junior Open, which began in Milan today. The German advanced with a 61 60 victory over Portugal’s Frederico Marques. In direct contrast, his countryman, Sebastian Rieschick, seeded two had to fight hard for his 57 62 64 victory over Daniel Vallverdu, from Venezuela.
There were also comfortable wins for third seed Brendan Evans, of USA, fourth seed Lucas Lacko, from the Slovak Republic, and Spain's Pablo Andujar-Alba, seeded seven, while sixth seed Karan Rastogi, of India, recovered from losing the first set to Venezuela's David Navarrete to run out a 36 64 60 winner. Two of the higher seeds were eliminated, however, as Dutchman Igor Sijsling overcame fifth seed Sun-Yong Kim 64 46 60 and Belarusian qualifier, Sergei Tarasevitch, put out eighth seed, Remko de Rijke, of the Netherlands, 62 75.
Ninth seed Fabio Fognini led a number of Italians though to the second round as he started his campaign with a 76(7) 63 defeat of Russian wildcard Andrei Goloubev, the Salsomaggiore champion. Joining Fognini in the second round are Andrea Arnaboldi, Matteo Marrai and wildcards Filippo Figliomeni, Andrea Turini and Stefano Rodighiero.
Second seed Sesil Karatancheva, fresh from victory at last week’s tournament in Santa Croce, defeated Italian opponent, Giulia Gabba, 63 62, in the first round of the girls’ singles. She was joined by top seed and defending champion, Michaella Krajicek, from the Netherlands, who swept past Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili, 62 64. The Ukraine’s Katerina Bondarenko, seeded three, No.4 seed, Veronika Chvojkova, of the Czech republic, fifth seed Volha Havartsova, of Belarus and Irina Kotkina, of Russia, the sixth seed, also advanced with easy victories.
Seventh seed, Agnes Szavay, of Hungary, battled back to finally see off Magdalena Rybarikova, of the Slovak Republic, 67(6) 60 64. The only seed to fall was No.8, Julia Cohen, of USA, who was soundly beaten 63 61 by Canada's Sharon Fichman, at 13 years old, one of the youngest players in the draw. Margot Torre became the first Italian girl to advance with a 63 64 win over Swiss lucky loser Martina Lautenschlager and was later joined by Lisa Sabino and Corinna Dentoni, who advances to a meeting with Karatancheva for the second week in a row.
