Banana Bowl Semifinalists Decided
All four boys’ quarterfinals went to form in today’s play at the 34th Banana Bowl in Sao Paolo, but two of the remaining four seeds in the girls’ singles were defeated.

Top seed Eduardo Schwank recovered to beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini 36 76(3) 61 to book his place in the semifinals. The Argentinian saved two match points and admitted that he was lucky to survive the second set, "He made a few errors and I took advantage of this. " The Argentinian has enjoyed a fantastic start to the year and will be aiming to reach his fifth final in a row when he plays El Salvador’s Rafael Arevalo-Gonzalez tomorrow. The third seed saw off another Italian, Gianluca Naso, 64 61.

The other semifinal sees fourth seed Pablo Andujar-Alba, of Spain, take on fifth seed Juan-Pablo Amado, of Argentina, after they dismissed the two remaining Brazilian players. Amado reached the semifinals for the second year running with a routine 62 63 defeat of unseeded Pedro Campos, while Andujar eliminated No.6 seed, Bruno Rosa 64 64. "I am very happy because in my opinion he was favourite to win," said the Spaniard afterwards and Rosa was disappointed, " I didn't have the right attitude. I was lacking in confidence. He was much more consistent and deserved to win.

Last year’s runner-up in the girls’ singles, Krysty Marcio, of USA, seeded fourteen, lost a tough three-setter to Russia’s unseeded Regina Kulikova 62 26 63. Kulikova advances to play Hungary’s Agnes Szavay, seeded three, who beat Aleksandra Wozniak, of Canada, seeded five, 63 75.

Russia’s Alisa Kleybanova, the defending champion wasted no time in reaching the semifinals as she thrashed Brazil’s Teliana Pereira 61 60. The top seed now faces her doubles partner and countrywoman, Irina Kotkina, bidding for her second success in two weeks after winning in Paraguay last week. Kotkina eliminated France’s Marine Giraud 64 62 and said afterwards, "it will be a very difficult match."

Tomorrow also sees the doubles’ finals take place: Kleybanova and Kotkina take on the Slovak pairing of Jana Juricova and Magdalena Rybarikova while another Slovak team, Lukas Lacko and Peter Miklusicak play Arevalo and Vahid Mirzadeh, of USA.
