| Banana Bowl Day 3 Round-Up |
USA's Krysty Marcio, who reached the final of the Banana Bowl last year, ousted second seed Marina Erakovic, of New Zealand, 63 64 to reach the quarterfinals in the day's only upset in the girls' singles. Marcio advances to play Russia's Regina Kulikova, who helped Russia to the World Junior Tennis final in 2003. Kulikova, who ousted sixth seed Ana Jerman, of Slovenia, in round one, continued her good form with a straightforward 62 63 victory over Austrian qualifier Anna Bartenstein.
Defending champion Alisa Kleybanova survived a tough first set to dismiss Jennifer-Lee Heinser, of USA 76(1) 61. The top-seeded Russian now plays the sole Brazilian player left in the draw, Teliana Pereira. Pereira followed up her defeat of no.8 seed, Maraike Biglmaier by eliminating her compatriot, Roxane Vaisemberg, 75 61.
The pick of the quarterfinals sees third seed Agnes Szavay, of Hungary, who today put out the youngest player left in the draw, 13-year-old, Sharon Fichman, of Canada in a topsy-turvy match 61 26 62, facing fifth seed Aleksandra Wozniak, another Canadian, seeded five who beat Teodora Mircic, of Serbia & Montenegro, 64 63. Wozniak reached the final of last week's Asuncion Bowl in Paraguay, where she lost to Irina Kotkina, who also reached the last eight with a comfortable 62 62 win over American ' lucky loser' Gira Schofield. Kotkina now faces France's Marine Giraud, who followed up her defeat of seventh seeded Vojislava Lukic, with a routine 63 60 dismissal of Nikola Frankova, the Czech Republic player.
In the boys' singles, the highest two remaining seeds both lost the first set in the matches but battled back for victories. Top seed Eduardo Schwank, of Argentina, overcame Aljoscha Thron, of Germany, 26 62 64 while third seed, El Salvador's Rafael Arevalo put paid to the hopes of Brazil's Thomas Belucci 16 64 64.
Schwank now faces eighth seed Fabio Fognini, of Italy, who knocked out USA's Dennis Zivkovic 64 62 and Arevalo goes forward to meet Gianluca Naso who eliminated no.11 seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, of Argentina 64 64.
Brazil's Bruno Rosa, seeded six, shaded Michael Shabaz, of USA, 75 64 to maintain hopes of a home victory and was joined by compatriot Pedro Campos, who followed up his defeat of second seed, Lukas Lacko, by outlasting Ghana's Salifu Mohammed 60 26 75. Campos now faces a tough assignment in fifth seed Juan Pablo Amado, who won last week in Paraguay and reached the last eight with a 75 61 victory over another Brazilian Andre Miele. Rosa will play the winner of the match between Renan Delsin, of Brazil and Pablo Andujar- Alba of Spain
