| Day Six at the Casablanca Cup |
In one of the best matches ever witnessed at the Casablanca Cup, Dutch boy Coen Van Kuelen defeated France’s Jeremy Chardy in three nailbiting sets 64 36 76(6) to progress to the boys’ singles final. There he will meet America’s Phillip Simmonds who beat Spain’s Guillermo Alcaide-Justel after the Spaniard retired losing 16 22. The girls’ final will see No.1 seed Julia Cohen (USA) takes on Germany’s Maraika Biglmaier.
The match between Van Kuelen and Chardy impressed all who witnessed it and Van Kuelen is now the outstanding favourite to take the title. Both players produced some phenomenal serving, in the first set the Dutch boy took first blood breaking Chardy’s serve to take the set 64. In the second set the roles were reversed when Chardy broke serve to take the second set 63. In the third set both held serve to 5-5 when Chardy had two break points for a 6-5 lead, but was unable to convert either. Thus, a tie-break was necessary to break the deadlock. Again Chardy had opportunities to take the match but could not capitalise and eventually handed the match to Van Kuelen with a double fault.
In the girls’ draw a tie-break was also called on to break the first set deadlock between Julia Cohen and Marina Erakovic. The No.1 seed took the advantage to lead one set to love, but Erakovic seemed to find the measure of Cohen’s game in the second set and leveled the match 64. However, Cohen did not lose heart and maintained her form whilst Erakovic began making increasing errors, handing the third set and the match to the American 62. In the other semifinal German girl Maraike Biglmaier also took the advantage thanks to a tie-break 76(0) but in the second overpowered the Dutch girl Nicole Thijssen 60. Marina Erakovic made up for her dissapointing semifinal loss in the singles by claiming the girls doubles crown with Dutch partner Bibiane Schoofs. In the final they defeated the pairing of Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak and Chinese Taipei’s Yun-Jang Chan 64 63.
Phillip Simmonds claimed the first part of what could be a clean sweep of titles by taking the boys’ doubles title with partner Timothy Neilly. In the all American final they defeated No.1 seeds Scott Oudsema and Brendan Evans in two nail biting sets with both took tie-breaks to decide the outcome, the final score 76(2) 76 (2).
