| Day Four at the Casablanca Cup |
The first big surprise of this year’s Casablanca Cup came when the Netherlands Coen Van de Keulen defeated No.1 seed Brendan Evans from the United States. The Dutch No.14 seed totally dominated the American, continually rushing the net, not allowing Evans a way to find his way past. Much to the dissapointment of the home crowd the last Mexican in the draw Luis Diaz Barriga also suffered defeat, at the hands of Spaniard Guillermo Alcaide Justel 46 62 63. The Mexican could not capitalise on winning the first set when he had twice broken the Spaniard’s serve. In the next two sets he began experiencing problems with his return and the Spaniard took full advantage. New Zealand’s William Ward, who has reached this stage with few problems, once again had an easy ride this time defeating German Daniel Muller 62 64. Ward will now face Van de Kuelen in the next round. Another boy progressing confidently is French boy Jeremy Chardy who saw off Robin Haase from Holland in the best match of the day 57 76(7) 75. Chardy’s next opponent will be Vahid Mirzadeh (USA) who defeated fellow American Donald Young 63 46 63. Another American Phillip Simmonds also claimed his quarterfinal spot with victory over Venezuela’s David Navarette 76 (1) 75 and will be joined in an all Ameican quarterfinal by Robert Cameron. Completing a quartet of Ameicans in the last eight is Scott Oudsema, No.2 seed, who progressed thanks to victory over qualifier Francisco Pozzi (ARG) 64 63.
Unlike in the boys’ draw, the No.1 seed in the girs’ drawJulia Cohen safely made it through to the next round with an impressive 61 60 victory over Marien Kassen (GER). However, the same cannot be said for the No.2 seed Yung Jan Chan who fell to another German Maraika Biglmaier 75 61. Croatia’s Mirna Marinovic who has unexpectadly progressed this far, defeated Elizabeth Kobak 64 60, will now take on the No.1 seed, and will be hoping to cause another upset. Canada’s Alexandra Wosniak, defeated Corina Perkovic (GER) 60 64 and will now face Marina Erakovic from New Zealand in the next round. Completing the quarterfinal line up are Nicole Thijssen (NED), Andrea Petkovic (GER), Tara Iyer (IND).
