| Day Three at the Casablanca Cup |
Luis Diaz Barriga, the last Mexican remaining in the boys singles draw, saw off Remko de Rijke, recent winner of the Yucatan Cup, to move into the last 16 where he will now face Guillermo Alcaide from Spain. The Mexican had to fight back after a poor first set which he lost 57 due to numerous service errors. Diaz Barriga knew how rectify the errors and refind his form to damage the Dutch boy and took the second set 64, despite a slight wobble when at 53 and serving for the set at 40-15 he double faulted twice to hand the game to de Rijke, however he quickly fought back to break immediately and take the set. In the third set Diaz Barriga had few problems, breaking early to lead 42, allowing him to play more freely and he subsequently took the set and match 63. The Mexican’s next opponent Spaniard Alcaide also took three sets to overcome his opponent Benedict Halbroth 61 46 60. David Navarrete from Venezuela also made it through, seeing off Croatian Pilip Siladi 63 62, as did Phillip Simmonds from USA who defeated his compatriot Michael Jonson 57 64 64. Others to progress are Igor Sijsling (NED), Robert Cameron (USA), Francisco Pozzi (ARG) and No.1 seed Brendan Evans (USA).
In the girls draw Chinese Taipei’s Yung Jan Chan, No.2 seed, continued her sequence of victories with a win over USA’s Ella Nze 57 62 61. Croatia’s Sanja Ancic made short work of Shana Claes from Belgium only allowing her two games 61 61. Joining Chan and Ancic were are Nicole Thussen (NED), Stephanie Wetmore (CAN), Andrea Petrovic (GER), Tara Iyer (IND), Jennifer Elie (USA) and Maraike Biglmaier.
