| Day One at the the Casablanca Cup |
The 2004 ITF Junior Circuit swung into action yesterday as the Grade A Copa Casablanca got under way in Mexico City. The top eight seeds in the girls’ singles all advanced comfortably to the second round with straight set victories but there were upsets in the boys’ singles.
Top seed Julia Cohen (USA) ended a run of five straight first round defeats with a 63 62 victory over Dominika Cibulkova (SVK), avenging her defeat in last week’s Yucatan Cup. Second seed Yung-Jan Chan (TPE) dismissed Canadian qualifier Valerie Saillant 61 61 and third seed Krysty Marcio (USA) defeated Mexican wildcard Ana Cristina Moreno 60 62. Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN), seeded four, double-bagelled the unfortunate Carla Tamborini (USA) 60 60 while Sanja Ancic, the No.5 seed dropped only two games in thrashing Natalia Baez (DOM) 61 61. Marina Erakovic (NZL), seeded seven, who reached the final of the Yucatan Cup last week, crushed Maria Paulina Gamboa (MEX) 61 60.
Boys’ top seed Brendan Evans (USA) beat fellow American, Marc Spicijaric 64 64 while second seed Scott Oudsema (USA) put out Mexican hope Jose Maria Galindo 62 61. Third seed Rafael Arevalo (ESA) advanced with a 75 75 defeat of Argentine qualifier Leonardo Mayer but fifth seed Juan Pablo Amado (ARG) crashed out to qualifier David Navarette (VEN) 63 62 to join sixth seed Timothy Neilly (USA) on the sidelines. Neilly was eliminated by countryman Donald Young who recently won the 16 & under Orange Bowl and was a 76(5) 62 winner. Yucatan Cup winner and seventh seed, Remko de Rijke (NED) eased past Jorge Godinho (POR) 63 62.
There will be further reports on this website as the tournament progresses.
