| Baghdatis and Chvojkova are the champions ! |
Marcos Baghdatis, of Cyprus, extended his lead at the top of the ITF Junior World rankings after securing victory in the Osaka Super Juniors. Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga took first blood in the final ,capturing the first set on a tiebreak but Baghdatis was not about to surrender and fought back to claim the next two sets and complete a 67(5) 63 63 victory. This was Baghdatis’ second victory on the ITF Junior circuit this year ,to add to the Australian junior title that he won in January, and his eighth career title, four of which have come at Grade A level including his victory at this tournament in 2001.
More importantly, Baghdatis now leads the rankings by 130 points, a valuable cushion as he has points to defend before the end of the year. The battle to be 2003 Junior World Champion is still all to play for. Tsonga has leapfrogged Florin Mergea into second place but all three boys still have a shot at the coveted title. There will be some exciting battles ahead between the three boys in the coming weeks.
Veronika Chvojkova capped her most successful week on the ITF Junior Circuit by edging out her fellow Czech, Andrea Hlavackova, in the girls’ final. Appearing in her first final at this level, she showed few signs of nerves as she rattled through the first set 62. Hlavackova struck back to take the second 61 but the younger girl held her nerve in the final set to complete a 62 16 64 victory, earn her first title and move into the top 10 of the girls’ rankings.
