| Top seeds untroubled |
Top seed Marcos Baghdatis, from Cyprus, wasted little time in joining his big rival, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga,, in the second round of the Osaka Super Junior 2003 as he easily dismissed his opponent, Dai-Chiao Lin, from Chinese Taipei, 60 61. With the two boys currently separated by just 100 ranking points, every victory could be crucial in the battle to be Junior World Champion.
Home hopes in the boys’ singles were dealt a blow, when the highest-ranked Japanese player, Kosuke Naruse, seeded eight, was upset 63 62 by Portugal’s Vasco Antunes. This proved to be the only upset of the first round as all the other seeded players easily advanced to the last 32; third seed Tai-Wei Liu, of Chinese Taipei, fresh from victory in Brunei last week, overwhelmed Japanese qualifier Tatsuma Ito 61 60 while fourth seed, Karan Rastogi, of India, defeated Ireland’s Tristan Farron-Mahon 61 64.
In the girls’ singles, top seed Emma Laine, of Finland, coasted through with a comfortable defeat of Japan’s Kaori Onishi 61 62 but there was a setback for Julia Cohen in her quest to secure a year-end top 10 ranking. The American, seeded three, was eliminated by Hee-Sun Lyoo-Suh, of Korea, 64 62. Seventh seed, Agnes Szatmari, of Romania also suffered a surprise defeat as she went out to Nudnida Luangnam,of Thailand, 62 63
