| Quarterfinal line-up decided |
The quarterfinal line-up was completed today at the Alberto Bonacossa Club in Milan and there were no surprises in the girls’ singles as the seeded players took their appointed places.
Jarmila Gajdosova of the Slovak Republic, seeded three, dismissed Canada’s Beier Ko 63 76 to advance to a meeting with fifth seed, Katerina Bohmova, of the Czech Republic, who defeated Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze 64 63. Neither girl has dropped a set in the tournament so far and Bohmova in her first Grade A quarterfinal, will now be looking to reverse the result of their previous meeting at the Eddie Herr International last December against the Junior US Open semifinalist.
The other quarterfinal meeting determined today will pit Ukrainian Viktoria Kutuzova, a 63 67 60 winner against Volha Havartsova, of Belarus, against Lithuania’s Aurelia Miseviciute, who beat Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 64 64. Miseviciute, seeded six here, has never advanced further than the quarterfinals at a Grade A event while Kutuzova was runner-up at the Australian Juniors in January.
In contrast, only three boys’ seeds have reached the last eight : top seed Nicolas Almagro, of Spain continued to progress with a comfortable 61 63 defeat of USA’s Timothy Neilly and will now face unseeded German, Eric Scherer, who ousted Spain’s Guillermo Alcaide-Justell 63 36 63 to reach his second Grade A quarterfinal. Almagro, having spent much of his time on the ITF Futures circuit, is competing in only his third junior tournament and has only ever lost one junior match to 2002 ITF Boys’ World Champion, Richard Gasquet at Roland Garros 2002.
Ninth seed Luis Flores, of Mexico, overcame marathon man Kamil Capkovic, of the Slovak Republic, who was seeded eighth, 67 63 1210; a result which means that Capkovic played an incredible 103 games in 8 sets here! The Mexican advances to his second Grade A quarterfinal against surprise package, Novak Djokovic, of Yugoslavia, who after defeating second seed David Brewer in the opening round, has reached this stage for the first time. After defeating Heithem Abid, of Tunisia 64 60, he said that he was very confident of his chances as his victory over Brewer had given him a very positive frame of mind. Flores won their only previous meeting in the Eddie Herr International last December.
The remaining quarterfinals, for which the pairings were decided yesterday, also take place tomorrow: girls’ top seed Vera Douchevina, of Russia, takes on Hungary’s Agnes Szavay and No.2 seed, Michaela Krajicek, of the Netherlands faces Kirsten Flipkens, of Belgium. Szavay and Flipkens are the only two unseeded players left in the girls’ singles. Boys’ No.3 seed, Daniel Gimeno-Traver,of Spain goes for his 31st victory in a row against Alex Kuznetsov, of USA while Vilim Visak, of Croatia takes on France’s Julien Gely.
