Strong Entry Field for 2003 Roland Garros Junior Championships
Nine of the top ten girls and eight of the top ten boys in the current ITF Junior rankings head an impressive entry list for the second junior Grand Slam event of the year, to be held on the clay courts of Roland Garros from 1st to 8th June. There is strength in depth too, as only five girls and three boys from their respective top 50s are not entered; the most notable absentee being 2002 ITF World Junior Champion Richard Gasquet, who has been awarded a wildcard into the men’s singles’ main draw.
Current World No.1s Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus and Vera Douchevina of Russia will both be bidding for their second junior Grand Slam title but will face stiff competition from their rivals which include the winners of this year’s two Grade A tournaments, Chris Kwon (USA) and Michaela Krajicek (NED),at the Yucatan Cup, David Brewer (GBR) and Alisa Kleybanova (RUS), the Banana Bowl winners, and 2002 ITF World Junior Champion Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic. Baghdatis and Strycova will be hoping to add the Roland Garros titles to the Australian Open titles that they won in Melbourne in January.
The remaining Wild cards will be announced on Thursday 15th May.
A detailed preview as well as daily reports and photos will be available throughout the event.
