Top Seeds Advance At Day Two of Burger King Orange Bowl
A day after winning the inaugural USTA International Winter Championships, Marcos Baghdatis and Jamea Jackson extended their winning streaks at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park to seven matches in eight days by winning their first round matches at the 55th Annual Burger King Orange Bowl Monday.

Baghdatis, seeded No. 1 for the second consecutive week, handled qualifier Mikhail Lew of Venezuela, 6-2, 6-2. He will play Germany’s Mischa Zverev in the second round.

The top seven boys’ 18s seeds advanced Monday as the first round concluded and half of the second round matches were contested. No. 8 Florian Lemke was eliminated in the second round by American Robert Yim, 6-7 (5), 6-1,6-2.

Joining Yim in the Round of 16 were No. 4 Mathieu Montcourt, No. 5 Chris Kwon and No. 6 Go Soeda.

All four of the top seeds in the girls’ 18s posted victories. No. 1 Vera Douchevina, the reigning Wimbledon girls’ champion, posted a straight-sets win over Japan’s Yurika Sema. She will play Maryori Franco in the second round for the chance to play 2001 Junior Orange Bowl 14s champion Shahar Peer of Israel. Peer ousted Nicole Vaidisova in the second round 6-3, 6-4.

No. 2 Anna-Lena Groenefeld rebounded from her loss to Jackson in Sunday’s final by handling 13-year-old Julie Cohen of nearby Boca Raton, 6-0, 6-2 in a first round match.

Jackson, the No. 14 seed this week, started slow against Sesil Karatamcheva before taking charge in a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 win. She will face Kristina Czafikova in the second round.

Rain shortened the first day of play in the boys’ and girls’ 16s competitions. Twenty-four of the 32 first-round girls’ matches were played to completion, but only two boys’ matches were completed.
