As the sun came out in Osaka today all the Japanese players went out of the Singles competition. Kazusa Ito, after her heroic performance against Pichaya Laosirichon yesterday, ran out of puff against Su-Wei Hsieh, managing to win only 2 games. Hsieh goes on to face top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova tomorrow. In the boys' competition 10th seed Go Soeda lost to the slightly higher ranked Pole Adam Chadaj 64 63, and Atsuo Ogawa lost to Tomislav Hadzic, who had accounted for no. 6 seed Pole Matthew Emery in the first round. All other seeds remained on course, Gilles Muller will face his first test tomorrow against 5th seed Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis . The pair have met only once before, in the semi-finals of the Asuncion Bowl in March, when it took Muller 3 tough sets to beat the Paris based Baghdatis. Yeu-Tzuoo Wang breezed past Pole Jaco Mathew and when asked about his match he said "I've played here many times so I was quietly confident. I will just have to keep on trying hard and we'll see what happens". Wang will take on Tomislav Hazdic tomorrow.
Marion Bartoli continues to storm through the draw, losing just one game today against Andrea Hlavackova. Speaking after her match, Bartoli said" I won the US Open on hard court so I was confident today. My next opponent is a pretty good player, so that will be difficult". In tomorrow's quarter-final match Bartoli will face no 5 seed Matea Mezak from Croatia.
Alongside the tournament, a workshop was held, part of which was an essay competition. 65 pieces were sent in from all over Asia/Oceania, the winner, Miss Amnith Maleela from New Zealand, was awarded 1st place for her essay entitled 'My Coach'. Mr Eiichi Kawatei, Chairman of the ITF Juniors Competitions Committee and President of the Asian Tennis Federation presented the prizes alongside Mr Masahiro Sato, Tournament Director.
