Maximillian Abel, the ¹99 Orange Bowl Boys 18s runnerup who was seeded 10th this year and ranked No. 20 in the world, was upset on Monday in the first round by Daniel Kollerer of Austria while Boys 16s champion Giovanni Lapentti, now competing in the 18s, was defeated by Yugoslavian Janko Tipsarevic on Tuesday (6-1, 5-7, 6-3).

On Monday, American Robby Ginepri defeated Switzerland's Roman Valent, the no. 5 seed in the Boys 18s (6-0, 7-6[10]). Ginepri was a member of the winning U.S. Sunshine Cup team while Valent withdrew from that competition with an undisclosed injury. Other top seeds falling in the Boys 18s on Monday were No. 4 seed Ytai Abougzir of the United States, who lost to Gilles Miles of Luxembourg (6-4, 6-4) and No. 7 seed Alejandro Falla Ramirez of Colombia, who lost to the Slovak Republic's Karol Beck (6-3, 7-5).

Two 14-year olds playing in the Girls 18s made it out of the first round on Tuesday. Shuai Peng of China, a qualifier, beat the United States' Bethanie Mattek (6-1, 6-7, 6-4) while Jamea Jackson of the United States beat Melissa Torres of Mexico (3-6, 6-3, 6-2). Peng pulled off the upset of Mattek after the American went 5-0 last week in doubles as the U.S. team won the Connolly Continental Cup.

Argentina's Gisela Dulko, the No. 8 seed in the 18-and-under Girls and No. 10 in the world, fell to Marie-Gaiane Mikaelian of Armenia (7-6(5), 6-4) and No. 7 Eva Birnerova lost to Monika Schneider (7-5, 6-1). Fifteen-year old American Ashley Harkleroad, after going undefeated in the Continental Cup last week in singles and doubles, earned a No. 15 seed for the OB draw. She went down in round one to Dominika Nociarova (6-2, 6-3) of the Slovak Republic

In the Boys 16s, top 10 seeded players falling included No. 4 Michal Przysiezny of Poland (to Benjamin Rufer 6-2, 6-2), No. 7 Lenoir Ramos (to Dorv Bolanu of Romania (6-2, 6-2) and No. 9 Komtavl Loglo (to Andre Iriante of the United States (7-6[5], 6-3).

In the Girls 16s, three Italians were seeded in the top 10 and all dropped their first-round matches. No. 1 seed Giorgia Mondani was the most prominent to exit, but also upset were Giorgia Buchanan, the No. 6 seed, who was beaten by American Douglas Wink (6-4, 2-6, 6-3) and No.
9 seed Rossella Sartore, who was ousted by Yugoslavia's Sanja Todorovic
(6-2, 6-0). Mondani was the favorite in the Girls 16s, before losing to
unknown Aibika Kalsarieva of Kyrghyzstan (7-6[2], 3-6, 6-1). The other top seed to lose was Croatia's Mia Kurek, No. 3, who was defeated by Sarah Tami of Paraguay (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) on Tuesday.
