Relentless Casanova leaves it late at Roland Garros
By Chris Bowers

It’s becoming a remarkable tournament for Switzerland’s Myriam Casanova. On Sunday she put out the seeded Eva Birnerova, and now she’s through to the quarter-finals - after nearly getting disqualified.

The various people gathered around Court 2 on Tuesday afternoon for Casanova’s match against the seeded Marion Bartoli did not include Casanova. The umpire looked around for her, and was just wondering how long he could give her before being obliged to default her when she showed up.

Maybe Casanova was late because she knew she didn’t need long to win her match, because she went on to crush Bartoli 6-0 6-1. And the sole game the luckless French girl won came at 5-0 in the second set, by which time she was in tears of frustration over her performance.

Bartoli was taking Casanova’s serve just a couple of metres behind the service line and charging to the net only to be passed by Casanova's great groundstokes. Like her compatriot Martina Hingis in the women’s singles, Casanova has dropped just one set in her run to the quarter-finals.

She now plays Kaia Kanepi, who continued her impressive form with a 7-6 6-3 win over Dinara Safina. The Russian fought well but ultimately had too few weapons with which to hurt the fourth seeded Estonian.

Elsewhere among the girls there were wins for the second seed Jelena Jankovic and one of the 5/8 seeds Ashley Harkleroad, the two who are due to meet in the quarter-finals on Thursday, but there was defeat for the No 3 seed Gisela Dulko at the hands of Virag Nemeth, and for one of the 9/12 seeds Renata Voracova against Lucia Migliarini.

In the boys’, the third round draw is now complete with the top two seeds Janco Tipsarevic and Gilles Muller both safely through. Tipsarevic beat Pavel Ivanov 6-2 7-5 and now plays Santiago Gonzalez, while at the bottom of the draw Muller beat Dusan Mihailovic 6-3 6-2 and now faces Iordan Kanev, who put out one of the 13/16 seeds Alex Bogdanovic.

The other boys’ seed to go was Luciano Vitullo, beaten by Luka Gregorc 6-2 7-5.Full results from the Roland Garros can be found on www.rolandgarros.com
