| Myriam Casanova pushed all the way by Jamea Jackson |
Day Two of the Trofeo Bonfiglio, and matches got tougher for the seeded players.
Myriam Casanova (SUI), top seed in the girls' singles, was pushed all the way by 15 year-old American Jamea Jackson, before winning 60 46 75. Ironically the two players met in the second round at last year’s Italian Open, when Casanova also came through a three-set battle. She will now face Lithuanian Aurelia Miseviciute, who survived a strong challenge from Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) 36 75 62.
It was a tough day for US girls, with the other two players in action failing to reach the third round. No. 16 seed Tory Zawacki, a resident at the Van Der Meer Tennis Academy, was overwhelmed by Russian Evguenia Linsetskaia 61 62, while Carly Gullickson found No. 3 seed Petra Cetkovska (CZE) too tough, losing 76(2) 63. Of the nine US players competing in Milan, only Shadisha Robinson is left to fight the US corner. She will play her second round match against No. 9 seed Elise Tamaela (NED) on Wednesday.
Other winners on day two were qualifier Ekaterina Bytchkova (RUS), who defeated Casey Dell'Acqua (AUS) 46 64 60, and No. 6 seed Andreja Klepac (SLO), who saw off Alexia Virgili (ITA) 61 46 63. No. 11 seed Mariana Correa (ECU) overcame Verdiana Verardi (ITA) 64 62, and No. 5 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld (GER) eased past Ana Ivanovic (YUG) 63 60.
In the boys' singles only one of the eight seeds in action failed to secure a third round place. Japan Open Champion Michel Koning, seeded No. 13, fell to Florian Lemke (GER) 64 61. Lemke will now face the Australian Open Champion Clement Morel (FRA), seeded No. 4, who put out Robert Haybittel (AUS) 63 64.
It was not a good day for British tennis with three players falling. Nick Crawley lost to top seed Brian Dabul (ARG) 64 62, Alexander Miotto lost to No. 10 seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) 62 62, and Ross Hutchins took the first set off Uruguayan No. 7 seed Martin Villarubi but eventually succumbed 36 63 64. The remaining Brit, Robert Searle will play No. 14 seed Tomas Berdych on Wednesday.
Title favourite Dabul will now face Brazil's Franco Ferreiro for a quarterfinal place. Ferreiro lost just one game to Italian wild card Mirko Balestro (ITA). Dabul and Ferreiro last met in the Banana Bowl semifinal, when Dabul stormed through 62 63.
Two other seeds went through to the third round. No. 12 Dudi Sela (ISR) came back from a set down to beat Vladimir Melnikov (RUS) 67(2) 61 60, and the last surviving Italian Andreas Seppi, seeded No. 5, gave away only two games to Michael Ryderstedt (SWE) 62 60.
The bottom half of the boys' and girls' singles draws will be played Wednesday at the Tennis Club Milan.
