| Brewer and Marcio head final line-up |
David Brewer and Krysty Marcio head the line up for tomorrow’s singles final at the Banana Bowl, Brazil.
The highest seed left in the draw, Brewer, made easy work of unseeded Juan Pablo Amado (ARG) in today’s semifinal match. The Brit reached his first career Grade A final with a 63 61 win.
Last standing Brazilian, Bruno Rosa, failed to last the distance against unseeded Federico Gil from Portugal. Rosa, who struggled to overcome No. 4 Jorge Aguilar on Friday, battle from a set down to take the match into a deciding set but was unable to stop the on-form Gil who last week captured the Grade 2 title in Argentina, the final score 61 57 64.
No. 5 seed Brewer and Gil will take centre stage on Sunday when both players make their debut in a Grade A final. The pair have played only once before, in the 2002 Grade 2 tournament in Ecuador, when Gil squeezed out victory in three sets.
Vojislava Lukic’s 21 match winning streak came to an end at the hands of No. 8 seed Alisa Kleybanova (RUS). Lukic had captured titles in Paraguay, Chile and Argentina en route to Brazil but the Yugoslav finally ran out of steak, losing 63 63.
The Russian will face no. 5 seed Krysty Marcio in the final. Marcio today despatched unseeded Agnes Szavay (HUN) 76(2) 75.
It will be a test of nerve in the girls’ singles final tomorrow as Marcio and Kleybanova face either other for the first time for the all important Grade A title.
