| Cohen and Aguilar head home after quarterfinal defeats |
The seeding upsets continued on Day Five of the Banana Bowl with the highest remaining boys’ and girls’ seed eliminated.
No. 2 seed Julia Cohen managed only two games in her match against no. 8 seeded Russian, Alisa Kleybanova, losing 62 60. Kleybanova will face the on-form Yugoslav Vojislava Lukic in the semifinals, who yet again had to battle to remain on course for a fourth consecutive title. Lukic lost the first set to Italy’s Federica Quercia in a tiebreak before finding her feet to take the match in three sets, 67(5) 62 62.
Agnes Szavay, the slayer of the seeds, claimed another scalp and eliminated Brazil’s hope of a home victory by ousting no.7 seed Larissa Carvalho 76(5) 46 60. Szavay will face the last standing American, no. 5 seed Krysty Marcio in a semifinal showdown tomorrow. Marcio lost only four games to no. 16 seed Katarina Zoricic (CAN), claiming victory 61 63.
Brazil still have some hope in the boys’ singles after no. 12 seed Bruno Rosa fought to the end against the talented Chilean Jorge Aguilar. Seeded no. 4, Aguilar was the highest seed left in the draw but the home crowd proved too much and he went down fighting 57 75 64. Rosa faces unseeded Frederico Gil in Saturday’s semifinal after the Portuguese eliminated qualifier Daniel Gimeno (ESP) 16 75 64.
The highest remaining seed in the draw is no. 5 David Brewer. The Brit made easy work of his quarterfinal match against Argentina’s Martin Alund, winning 64 63. Brewer will now take on Argentina’s Juan Pablo Amado who lost just one game to qualifier Fabio Fognini of Italy. Fognini, who in the second round ousted no. 2 seed Leonardo Kirche, finally ran out of steam, losing 61 60.
The American boys’ may not have been successful in the singles competition but they are guaranteed a winner in the boys’ doubles. Top seeds, Frederico Gil (POR) and Chris Kwon (USA) will take on no. 2 seeded Americans Alex Kuznetsov and Vahid Mirzadeh in Saturday’s final. The girls’ doubles title will be contested between unseeded Megan Moulton-Levy (USA) and partner Katarina Zoricic (CAN) and no. 2 seeds Larissa Carvalho (BRA) and Soledad Esperon (ARG).
